INDUSTRY INSIGHTS:

A Compelling Reason to Buy

-   Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director & executive market analyst, Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com

The federal government’s CARS 2009 program, popularly known as ‘Cash for Clunkers,’ ended a little more than a month ago, and one thing abundantly clear is that the program provided consumers with a compelling reason to buy, and importantly, to buy now. When all was said and done, the CARS program provided the immediate impetus for around three-quarters of a million new-vehicle sales. It undoubtedly moved the market at a time when the market was desperately in need of moving by utilizing two important (and compelling) reasons for consumers to get up off their couches and buy a car – substantial cash and a looming deadline. That moved the market, and we saw a sales spike. But there are lessons to be learned from the $3 billion taxpayer-funded exercise.

If the goal of the CARS 2009 program was to stimulate new-vehicle sales in the short term, it certainly did that. And if another goal of the CARS 2009 program was to get older, less-fuel-efficient vehicles off the road and replaced by brand-new, higher fuel-efficiency vehicles then it did that, too. The jury is still out on whether the program actually succeeded in saving fuel or putting a dent in our foreign oil imports. The ongoing recession is having a much larger effect on those twin factors than ‘Cash for Clunkers’ ever could, so perhaps we’ll never know.

However, if one of the goals of the CARS 2009 program was to give the U.S. auto industry a jump-start that would continue after the program ended, it is now abundantly clear that the program did not accomplish that. As I write this September sales are still ongoing so sales figures are unavailable, but it is still clear that September will be a very lackluster month with sales down precipitously from both the ‘Cash for Clunkers’ months of July and August 2009. The seasonally adjusted annualized sales rate is very likely to fall below 10 million units after enjoying a spurt in August. While CARS 2009 was a compelling reason to buy in August, once it was over consumers generally put their checkbooks away. Some hoped that the unprecedented government support of vehicle sales would spur ongoing momentum, like giving a toboggan a quick shove to get it going downhill. But instead, like a car running out of gas, the momentum stopped almost as soon as the stimulus money ran out.

To the extent it got American consumers in a car-buying mood again, CARS 2009 was a success. But a short and artificial sales spike is not what this industry – or the economy as a whole – needs. It is clear that when consumers are presented with a compelling reason to buy, they will. What are compelling reasons? Well, money is one, but a great product that captures the imagination of the consumer is another. Every manufacturer has to ask: “Are the vehicles I’m bringing to market strong enough, new enough, exciting enough to compel purchase?” If they are not, many consumers have made the decision that their current vehicle is good enough, especially in these difficult times.

2010 Cadillac CTS

When GM set out in the late 1990s to resurrect its once-proud Cadillac brand, the public process began with Evoq, the 1999 stealth-fighter concept sports car that eventually evolved into the production 2004 XLR. But the 2003 all-new "entry luxury" CTS Sedan brought this new Cadillac look and personality to market first. Its "Art and Science" theme was a bold blend of space-age style and technology, and its edgy styling was polarizing – some liked it, some didn't. But it delivered the right stuff in performance, features and road dynamics, while only its austere interior caught critical flack. For 2010, Cadillac continues to improve the formula, bringing a CTS Sedan to market that has won rave reviews from critics and customers alike…

2010 Chevrolet Corvette

Once hailed as America's only true two-seat sports car, the 2010 Chevrolet Corvette continues to offer driving enthusiasts the most bang for the buck, running neck-and-neck (and in some cases surpassing) exotic cars costing up to four times as much – or even more. No where else but in America can you find a two-seat sports car costing roughly $50,000 and delivering 430 horsepower while returning an EPA highway fuel economy figure of 26 miles per gallon. Although not as light or nimble as the Porsche 911, the Corvette's optional Z51 Performance Package renders it track-ready, while the car's luxurious interior and comfortable ride make it perfect for daily commutes or long weekend getaways. For those willing to spend a lot more, there's the 505 horsepower Z06, and the Supercar status ZR1…

2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

The 2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac is the second generation of a vehicle that started a sub-trend: A truck, with sport-utility characteristics, four doors, a rather short cargo bed and an assortment of ingenious features to enhance the anticipated active lifestyles of its intended buyers. It's not quite a sport utility vehicle and it's not quite a truck. On the large size in this group are the Chevrolet Avalanche and Cadillac Escalade EXT, while more directly competitive in size is the Honda Ridgeline. The original Sport Trac was based on the Ford Explorer, as is the newest version. But the Explorer has grown up, both in size and sophistication, and so has the Sport Trac…

2010 Ford F-150

It is hard to imagine a more inauspicious time to have introduced a new full-size pickup truck – with the possible exception of the Eve of Destruction – but last year's introduction of the all-new Ford F-150 seems to have defied the odds of failure. Shouldering its way into the U.S. market on a crest of increased capabilities across the board, Ford has correctly figured that the bulk of its sales will come from buyers who genuinely need the unique aspects full-size pickups offer – big payload and towing capacities among them – instead of those who simply want to be seen in a pickup. With this in mind, Ford engineers have built in class-leading capabilities in both these areas while, at the same time, boosting fuel economy across the board. But don't think they skimped on creature comforts, as the 2010 Ford F-150 offers increasing levels of luxury from among its 35 variants…

2010 Ford Flex

The 2010 Flex is Ford's newest and arguably most attractive crossover SUV. Designed to carry seven passengers, yet achieve the same kind of fuel economy as a mid-size sedan, the Flex is part of a growing trend away from V8-powered leviathans and toward more space efficient vehicles, particularly when towing is not a high priority, although the addition of the EcoBoost power option enhances the Flex's towing ability markedly. If all you need is room, a minivan or mid-size SUV could certainly do the trick, but neither have the cutting-edge cool the Flex seems to ooze. With room for lots of their friends, an optional built-in refrigerator and the technology-friendly SYNC audio system, the Flex can easily transform itself from family transport to Friday-night cruiser with just a turn of the ignition…

2010 Ford Ranger

The 2010 Ford Ranger finds itself surrounded by a number of newer and larger competitors, making it necessary for Ford to keep its compact truck competitive by offering ongoing improvements, fresh styling and rock-bottom pricing. Along side the compact Ranger, only the Chevrolet Colorado, its sibling twin the GMC Canyon and the Toyota Tacoma offer a regular-cab configuration, an appealing feature for those looking for a bare-bones truck. The Ranger SuperCab models feature two small rear doors, but no crew-cab model challenges similar vehicles from Dodge, Nissan and Toyota. With no V8 option under the hood, the Ranger also falls behind the class leaders in horsepower and towing capability…

2010 Mazda CX-7

With full-size SUVs falling from public favor, manufacturers are pinning their hopes on crossovers. These cars combine the ride and handling of a car with the high seating position and spacious cargo hold of a large SUV, but without the larger vehicle's penalties for fuel economy and maneuverability. One such vehicle is the 2010 Mazda CX-7, a sleek, five-passenger SUV with the heart of a sports car. Designed to evoke the same sporty image as Mazda's flagship performance coupe, the RX-8, the CX-7 may be the sportiest crossover you can buy for around $22,000. Although the CX-7's available turbocharged four-cylinder engine may be a radical departure for those accustomed to a big V8, we think consumers will quickly warm up to its powerful performance and reasonable fuel consumption…

2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The 2010 MX-5 Miata roadster continues to capture the hearts of driving enthusiasts and open-air aficionados everywhere. The lightweight roadster may not be big on horsepower, but its 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution, dynamic suspension and lightning-quick steering make it a blast to drive, while its excellent fuel economy makes it the perfect commuter car. Despite its small proportions, the 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata is easy to live with. The top, for example, can be operated from inside the car with just one arm and, when retracted, collapses into a small well behind the seats, as does the new available power-operated hardtop. As a result, the MX-5 Miata's small trunk is unaffected by the top's position, a claim few other drop-tops can make…

2010 Nissan 370Z Roadster

Although an automotive icon in its own right, it's easy to forget that Nissan's venerable Z car is only a few years younger than cultural symbols like the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro. It's been forty years, in fact, since the 151-horsepower Nissan 240Z first went on sale in the U.S. Challengers have come and gone in that time, but the latest iteration, the 332-horsepower 370Z, is a car without a true rival. And the new-for-2010 convertible version is even more distinctive: there's simply nothing out there with the same combination of price, power and packaging. To the 370Z Roadser's credit, the most logical comparisons are to premium roadsters like the BMW Z4 sDrive35i and Porsche Boxster S - cars with starting sticker prices all the way on the other side of $50,000. And while that makes value a part of the story, the 370Z Roadster is quite capable of competing on its performance merits alone…

2010 Subaru Legacy

Subaru has established itself as a leader in all-wheel-drive technology. Its wagons and SUVs have a cult-like following that is every manufacturer's dream. But its mainstream sedan, the Legacy, has not caught on in the same way. Competing against such heavy hitters as the Accord, Camry, Malibu and Fusion, the 2009 Legacy suffered from a case of the "too littles." Unable to compete in the areas of interior room, cargo volume, fuel economy and competitive pricing, the Legacy was overdue for a complete makeover and that's just what Subaru has given the 2010 model. Although roughly the same length as the outgoing car, the new Legacy is wider, taller and has considerably more interior room than its predecessor; it also offers a marked improvement in power and fuel economy, as well as its standard content level. Best of all, consumers can now pick up an all-wheel-drive sedan for less money than a comparably-equipped front-drive competitor…

KBB.COM KICKS OFF FOOTBALL SEASON WITH TOP 10 NEW TAILGATING CARS

IRVINE, Calif., September 9, 2009 – The Top 10 Tailgating Cars, www.kbb.com/toptailgatingcars, today were named by the expert editors from Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new car and used car information. With college football already underway and the NFL season kickoff in sight, the editors thought it would be a perfect time to highlight several new cars and trucks that are great for tailgating parties.

If one seeks evidence of a higher power, ponder the seamless transition between the end of summer and the beginning of football season; one weekend people are picnicking in the park, and the next they are tailgating in a stadium parking lot. To help celebrate this change of seasons (and eating venues), the editors of Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com put together the list to facilitate a ritual that has become near and dear to Americans’ hearts. While any vehicle with enough room for chairs, tables and coolers will do in a pinch, today’s top tailgating rides offer a variety of party-enhancing extras.

The kbb.com editors chose new cars with such tailgating-friendly features as: speakers that flip-down from the rear hatch, multiple video monitors prime for game-watching, built-in table and seating options, fold-down tailgates equipped with step-ladder and handle, removable in-vehicle coolers, rear cargo-compartment audio controls, power liftgates, dual power outlets and an array of impressive sound systems, to mention a few.

“Auto manufacturers are increasingly creating vehicles with particular lifestyles in mind, and undoubtedly the huge football-following American public has influenced some design choices,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “While some may only think of the traditional pickup truck as being ideal for tailgating, our choices show that there are tailgate-friendly vehicles available in just about every size and price-point.”

Sample Choices from kbb.com’s Top 10 Tailgating Cars List

Dodge Caliber

Ford F-150

GMC Acadia

Honda Element

IRVINE, Calif., September 3, 2009 – Ten Great Cars for 10 Different Jobs, http://www.kbb.com/10cars10jobs, today were named by the expert editors from Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new car and used car information.

While some may think of the Labor Day holiday as the end of summer, the beginning of school, the start to football season, or perhaps just another three-day weekend, the U.S. Department of Labor sees it as a “yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”

In the spirit of the national holiday and putting some of the ‘labor’ back into Labor Day, the editors of Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com created a list of 10 Great Cars for 10 Different Jobs. The editors chose corresponding new-car options for such vastly diverse jobs as: real estate agent, bounty hunter, small business delivery/utility, private investigator, courier, long-haul salesman, marketing, construction, outdoor tour guide and paper delivery.

“In light of the uniquely American work ethic and love of cars, and of course the United States’ Labor Day holiday weekend, our editors thought of 10 very different jobs and then brainstormed the best new vehicles on the market for those occupations,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “From more extreme occupations like bounty hunters, private investigators and outdoor tour guides, to more common jobs like small-business owners, real estate agents and salesmen, the kbb.com list is sure to provide thought-provoking transportation options for those in various lines of work.”
