INDUSTRY INSIGHTS:

Will Clunker-Mania Cure Car Business Woes?

-   Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director & executive market analyst, Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com

The initial results are in, much like the weekend look at the movie box office, and the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS 2009), which is more commonly known as “Cash for Clunkers,” is a certified hit. It has created huge amounts of traffic on Web sites like our own Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com, on manufacturer Web sites and, importantly, in dealer showrooms. In addition, it also has proved to be the impetus for incremental sales. The important question that remains to be answered is also one that can be expressed in movie box office terms – does it have “legs?”

It is hard to argue against the initial results of the federally sponsored program. Spurred by an unprecedented amount of advertising and marketing efforts from car manufacturers who are desperately looking for ways to get potential buyers off their couches, the CARS 2009 program has resulted in a flood of inquiries and a strong stream of traffic. Early results also indicate that many of the consumers taking part in the program are not typical new-car intenders, which means incremental sales. Many of the vehicles that came in during the first full weekend of the program were not-so-Golden Oldies from the previous millennium. One can presume that the current owner-driver of a 1996 Ford Explorer, 1995 Dodge Ramcharger or 1991 Jaguar XJS would not be a prime candidate for new-car ownership given other circumstances, but there they were, waiting for their piece of the government pie as the program drew its opening breaths.

One person who was not surprised by the initial rush of clunker-people was Rae Tyson, a key spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which has been charged with administering the CARS program.

“I have to admit, we kind of expected this,” Tyson told Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “In the process of setting up this program, we spoke frequently with our opposite numbers in Germany where they have recently instituted a similar program, and when their program launched it pretty much tied up the Internet for several hours.”

Happily, the Internet has not bogged down here in the U.S., but we at Kelley Blue Book are experiencing unprecedented traffic. Just as I was writing the previous sentence I got notice that our kbb.com site experienced its highest visits day ever, up a full five percent from the previous record.  We also experienced the highest page-views day ever, up eight percent from the previous all-time high experienced back in 2005.

So, the signs that the CARS 2009 program will move the needle in a positive way are unmistakable. One underreported aspect of the program and the media hype surrounding it, is that it has consumers excited about buying cars again. When viewed in retrospect, the consumers who don’t qualify for the program might be as important as those who do. Why? Because consumers who get the car-buying bug, do research on the Web and go into showrooms are likely candidates to buy a new vehicle even if they find they don’t have a qualifying “clunker.” Sure, there is the chance that the build-up to the CARS 2009 announcement has led to a deluge of interest that may not be able to be sustained – reports in the last day suggest that government funds are already running low. But right now, the program, as imperfect as it may be, is a very welcome breath of new life in the car industry.

2010 Buick Enclave

Over the years Buick has worked hard change its image from a builder of cars that are long on comfort, but short on excitement. It is a little surprising, then, to encounter the 2010 Buick Enclave, a family-friendly eight-passenger crossover SUV that proves Buick can build an exciting vehicle. Now beginning its third year of production, the Enclave is Buick's entry into the growing luxury SUV category and competes with well-established offerings from Lexus, Acura, BMW and Volvo. With eye-catching exterior styling, a highly usable interior and a remarkably quiet cabin the Buick Enclave has what it takes to be a viable competitor in this hot segment…

2010 Chevrolet Aveo

The 2010 Chevrolet Aveo, a smartly styled subcompact, offers excellent fuel economy, a long list of standard features and a bargain-basement price. The Aveo's appeal extends to budget-conscious first-time buyers, anyone on a limited income and unhappy SUV owners looking for an affordable and fuel-efficient way of getting to and from the office. Available as a sedan or sporty five-door hatchback, the Aveo's uncommonly high roof means tall occupants can sit comfortably in both front and rear, a major bonus for those who might stay clear of some small cars due to their cramped interiors…

2010 Chevrolet HHR

While some dismiss the 2010 Chevrolet HHR as little more than a PT Cruiser clone, in truth the two vehicles appeal to very different audiences. Where the PT seems to pull in Baby Boomers and Gen X males, the HHR speaks to today's young drivers who like to customize their cars with extreme paint jobs and near-deafening sound systems. By itself, this slick piece of work serves as a practical wagon version of the Cobalt sedan disguised as a retro mini Suburban. There's even a cool Panel version with windowless side panels and side cargo doors. Though smaller than it appears in pictures, the HHR is nevertheless a versatile and fun-to-drive vehicle as equally suited to small families as it is to hip singles…

2010 Chevrolet Impala

After a complete image makeover in 2006, the Impala gained a cleaner, more sophisticated exterior and a significant interior upgrade. Four years later, the 2010 Chevrolet Impala, slotted to compete with class front-runners Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, has little change. Although the Impala may not have the strong resale figures of its Japanese rivals, it does have a number of redeeming qualities. The Impala features a large back seat and trunk, and a loyal following. Still, it's fair to say the Impala has its work cut out for it, especially with the loss of the sporty SS trim. With newer and better equipped vehicles, such as the Ford Taurus and Dodge Charger, ready to steal away domestic customers, dealers may be willing to deal to help keep the Impala moving…

2010 Chevrolet Malibu

Chevy's mid-size offerings, like most GM passenger cars, suffered corporate neglect in the 1990s and early 2000s as customers – and the company's engineering attention and budget – increasingly shifted toward trucks and SUVs. Two years after its introduction, the most important vehicle in the Chevrolet lineup isn't a truck or SUV, but a car: The 2010 Malibu. Chevrolet's Malibu has bolted from middle-of-the-road contender straight to the top of the mid-size sedan game. The 2010 Malibu looks wonderful, is solidly built and carefully crafted inside and out, offers good fuel economy, drives wonderfully and is priced to sell in serious volumes. There is even an affordable "mild" hybrid version that performs better than the base four-cylinder car and gets four miles-per-gallon better in city driving…

2010 Ford Taurus

The Ford Taurus has long been known as a family sedan, but the 2010 model forgoes that notion, instead targeting buyers who want a car for themselves that also happens to seat five in comfort. There are still the typical sedan trappings, including a roomy interior, a big trunk and comfortable ride, but the new Taurus has a sharper focus on progressive design, engaging driving dynamics and advanced technologies. Competing with vehicles like the Toyota Avalon and Chrysler 300, the Ford Taurus aims to infuse the often uninspiring full-size sedan category with a dose of passion…

2010 GMC Acadia

Although it is the first crossover SUV ever sold by GMC, the 2010 GMC Acadia actually shares most of its structure and many of its features with the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave. The Acadia successfully combines the appearance and capabilities of an SUV with an added measure of practicality and efficiency. It seats up to eight people, has ample room for luggage or cargo and offers good fuel economy. Considering that most SUVs never leave paved roads, GMC expects the Acadia's street-focused ride, handling and available all-wheel drive to make up for its lack of off-road capability. The Acadia's competitors include the Honda Pilot, Dodge Durango and Ford Explorer…

2010 Honda Insight

Honda was the first brand to bring a hybrid to the American market, so the fact that the Toyota Prius from the company's arch-rival has come to represent all hybrids in the minds of many American consumers caused no small amount of irritation within the halls of Honda. Now Honda is re-engaging in combat over hybrid supremacy with its all-new 2010 Insight, a vehicle designed to bring the advantages of a hybrid powertrain to a new, less-affluent set of buyers. The new model combines a 1.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 10-kilowatt electric motor plus serious computer power to create a reasonably simple but still very effective hybrid drive system. Called Integrated Motor Assist, the hybrid system works well while keeping costs down and it offers the additional advantage of being packaged in the four-door hatchback so efficiently that the Insight offers foldable rear seats…

2010 Toyota Prius

The Latin word prius means "to go before." Used as a vehicle name, it certainly fits the world's first mass-produced and best-selling hybrid, with well over a million sold to date. The Toyota Prius, now in its third generation for 2010, has gone from being the quirky vehicle of choice for those wanting to live a greener lifestyle to a mainstream and fuel-thrifty mode of transportation appealing to families and empty-nesters alike. And, along the way, it has inspired other car companies to increase their efforts in the hybrid market. However, when it comes to covering the most ground using the least amount of fuel, the Prius handily takes the cake from its competitors with its EPA-estimated 51/48 city/highway mpg ratings…

2010 Toyota Sequoia

The 2010 Toyota Sequoia was designed with long road trips in mind. Substantial width and length provide ample rear passenger room, and adults can ride comfortably in the third-row seats. This full-size sport utility vehicle can be quickly reconfigured into a flat-floored cargo hauler that will swallow lengthy items, and a strengthened frame with integral hitch receiver allows it to tow trailers up to 10,000 pounds. A refined front suspension teamed with an independent rear suspension and improved shock absorber valving help produce a smooth highway ride. The optional 5.7-liter V8 makes 381 horsepower, which is 71 more than the standard V8. In size, the Sequoia slots between the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, which, along with the Ford Expedition, are its prime competitors…

KBB.COM’S ‘CASH FOR CLUNKERS’ CALCULATOR FEATURES MORE COMPREHENSIVE CONSUMER RESOURCES AS FEDERAL PROGRAM TAKES EFFECT

(View the multi-media news release here: http://www.prnewswire.com/mnr/kbb/39045/)

Kbb.com Calculator Now Connects Consumers with Dealers to Get Price Quotes on Qualifying New Vehicles

IRVINE, Calif., July 24, 2009 – Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new-car and used-car information, today announces an addition to its Cash for Clunkers Calculator on the company’s top-rated Web site, kbb.com. As the federal Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) - the official government name of the Cash for Clunkers program - takes effect this week, the kbb.com Cash for Clunkers Calculator, which helps consumers determine if their current vehicle might be eligible for up to $4,500 toward the purchase of a more fuel-efficient new car, now connects consumers with dealers offering their best price on the qualifying new vehicle of choice.

Kbb.com provides a simple, interactive Cash for Clunkers Calculator that helps consumers evaluate vehicle model years 1989 to 2009 based on make, model and condition, and then determines whether they may be eligible for a credit under the CARS program. The age of the vehicle, its fuel economy and the fuel efficiency rating of the new car are key factors to determine whether the vehicle qualifies for a ‘Cash for Clunkers’ credit toward the purchase of a new vehicle. The calculator also displays the Kelley Blue Book® Trade-In Value, so that consumers can determine whether their vehicle is worth more or less than the possible credit they could receive from the CARS program.

Once the kbb.com Cash for Clunkers Calculator determines the possible eligibility of their current vehicle, it then provides resources to find a new, more fuel-efficient car that is right for them. The calculator allows consumers to choose a segment and price range to begin their next new fuel-efficient car search, and then returns a list of eligible new cars that meet the consumer’s criteria. In addition, shoppers now can obtain a quick dealer price quote on a new car from local dealerships directly within the kbb.com Cash for Clunkers Calculator. At the end of the process, consumers can print a handy one-page summary of their trade-in vehicle and their next desired new vehicle to take with them to a dealership.

“Kbb.com’s Cash for Clunkers Calculator assists consumers through the process from start to finish, providing resources to help determine eligibility, shop for a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle, and even find a local dealer and obtain a quick price quote, all with a few easy clicks of the mouse,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com.

Ford is the official sponsor of the Cash for Clunkers program on Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. Ford has been on the forefront of this new federal program and is dedicated to providing consumers the information they need. Ford also recently launched its ‘Let Ford Recycle Your Ride’ campaign to help take the confusion out of the Cash for Clunkers program. With an impressive line-up of fuel-efficient cars, trucks and utility vehicles, Ford can offer a variety of gas-sipping models to fit the needs of any consumer.

Under the groundbreaking, government-sponsored Cash for Clunkers program, a consumer can receive instant credit toward the purchase of a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle upon trade-in of an old, gas-guzzling ride that has a combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles-per-gallon or less, is in drivable condition and has been insured and registered for the past year by the same owner.

The CARS programs runs through November 1, 2009, or until government funds are exhausted. For more information about the Cash for Clunkers program, visit www.kbb.com/cashforclunkers to view program details, articles and a detailed video.

“Traffic to every area of our site has seen a significant lift this year including consumers researching new-car pricing, vehicle reviews and helpful decision-making tools,” said Justin Yaros, executive vice president, product design and development for Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com. “With the steady growing visitor count, there is no better place for dealers and manufacturers looking to effectively reach a very targeted audience of in-market vehicle shoppers than kbb.com.”

The top five most-researched model/trim combinations on this record-breaking traffic day for kbb.com were the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS, 2009 Honda CR-V LX 2WD, 2010 Toyota Prius, 2010 Chevrolet Camaro LS and 2010 Toyota Camry LE, respectively. The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro was by far the most-researched vehicle on July 13, with three of its trim levels (SS, LS and LT) present among the top 10 most-researched model/trim combinations on July 13, 2009.

COMPETITIVELY PRICE INVENTORY, IMPROVE TURN WITH ALL-NEW MARKET PRICING TOOL FROM CDMDATA

CDMdata, a Kelley Blue Book Company, Launches Dealer Solution for Effectively Competing in Marketplace

Irvine, Calif., July 21, 2009 – CDMdata, Inc., a Kelley Blue Book company, today announces its all-new Market Pricing tool, available through AutoOffice®, CDMdata’s Web-based automotive management tool. Market Pricing helps dealerships understand how their used-car pricing compares to local sellers and the overall market. This information provides a snapshot of other vehicle listings and creates an opportunity to better leverage Kelley Blue Book® Values to price inventory. This cost effective solution offers a simple way to make necessary pricing adjustments as the market shifts.

Market Pricing assembles local retail prices of other similar and exact vehicles selling in the current marketplace, within a 300 mile radius, in one simple-to-read report.   The dealership can then quickly evaluate and determine pricing based on the competition. With this information, dealers can make strategic changes in pricing to be in line with the market to increase the number of leads received, ultimately improving turn rate and maximizing sales.

“Identifying the competition, especially in the current economy, is pivotal to making tactical business decisions. Dealers need to know where they stand and what it is they need to do to make a sale over the other guy,” said Mike Romano, chief operating officer for CDMdata, Inc., and senior vice president of dealer strategy for Kelley Blue Book. “Market Pricing is a comprehensive tool for dealerships looking to competitively price its inventory.”

In addition, Market Pricing offers selectable parameters for easy access to the information the dealer wants to see. View a list of matches by trim, model, and similar unpriced vehicles, choose the search radius, select the vehicle mileage to compare within, search all vehicle matches or just certified matches, and even check out the competing ad for additional details like vehicle features.

THE TRUSTED MARKETPLACESM NOW LIVE ON KBB.COM

Vast™ Provides Search and Advertising Platform for Kelley Blue Book’s The Trusted Marketplace

IRVINE, Calif., and SAN FRANCISCO– July 20, 2009 – Kelley Blue Book www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new car and used car information, today announces the launch of The Trusted Marketplace, a new online car shopping experience on its top-rated Web site utilizing Vast’s search and advertising platform. Vast.com, Inc. is the leading provider of online marketplaces in auto, travel, and real estate.  The Trusted Marketplace guides consumers to the vehicle that best matches their needs while helping dealers better reach in-market car buyers.

“Kelley Blue Book and Vast share a vision for the ultimate online marketplace: one that provides the most helpful customer experience while delivering dealers the best value in the industry,” said Justin Yaros, executive vice president, product design & development with Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “We achieve both by presenting consumers with the best-matched vehicle to their search criteria, resulting in more serious, down-funnel prospects for dealers.”

In the fourth quarter of 2009, Vast’s platform will help Kelley Blue Book make a revolutionary move to a pay-for-performance model, allowing dealers to better manage their vehicle marketing costs. Paying on a per lead basis allows dealers to closely track their costs and realize the value of each high-quality, consumer-interest lead.

“The Vast platform is creating a new online standard in automotive, providing incredible value for dealers with a pay-for-performance model,” said Phil DuPree, president of AutoUSA. “We are thrilled to be an early participant on the Vast platform and the new kbb.com.”

“Kbb.com and Vast could not be more timely with an ROI focused solution for dealers,” said Gary Marcotte, senior vice president of ecommerce for AutoNation. “Working with Vast over the past year we know the model works for dealers better than anything else out there, and with kbb.com’s high-quality in-market shoppers, there is no better marketing opportunity for dealers today.”

With 12 million visits to kbb.com each month, Kelley Blue Book is in a unique position to engage highly qualified, in-market vehicle buyers in The Trusted Marketplace. Dealers can do several things to promote their listings in the search results within the set of vehicles that meet the consumers’ preferences:

       ·          The Trusted Marketplace program rewards local dealers' high-quality, competitively priced listings rather than dealers who pay premium prices for placement.

·          Dealers can become a Kelley Blue Book Showcase Dealer by September 30, 2009 and receive a feature-rich Dealer StoreFront page within The Trusted Marketplace on kbb.com, as well as new lead opportunities, special messaging and merchandising opportunities for a nominal monthly fee.

“We are thrilled that we were selected to power kbb.com’s The Trusted Marketplace,” said Kevin Laws, president and CEO of Vast.com. “With Kelley Blue Book’s online automotive leadership position, the company will be able to demonstrate a search marketplace to the entire industry that is measurably more efficient and effective for both buyers and sellers than a typical online classified solution.”

KBB.COM LAUNCHES ‘CASH FOR CLUNKERS’ CALCULATOR

(View the multi-media news release here: http://www.prnewswire.com/mnr/kbb/38983/)

Kelley Blue Book Provides Key Details for Federal Cash for Clunkers Program, Finding Best Next Car

IRVINE, Calif., July 2, 2009 – Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new-car and used-car information, today announces the launch of its Cash for Clunkers Calculator on its top-rated Web site, kbb.com. Using the Cash for Clunkers Calculator, consumers can gain important details to assist them in determining if their current vehicle might be eligible for up to $4,500 toward the purchase of a more fuel-efficient new car, research new-car options, and reach a dealer -- all in one place.

Kbb.com provides a simple, interactive Cash for Clunkers Calculator to help consumers determine whether they may be eligible for a credit under the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), the official government name of the Cash for Clunkers program. The calculator helps consumers evaluate vehicles with model years between 1989 and 2009 based on make, model, condition, and mileage. The age of the vehicle, its fuel economy and the fuel efficiency rating of the new car are key factors to determine whether the vehicle qualifies for a ‘Cash for Clunkers’ credit toward the purchase of a new vehicle. The calculator also displays the Kelley Blue Book® Trade-In Value, to help consumers determine whether their vehicle is worth more or less than the possible credit they could receive from the CARS program.

Under this groundbreaking, government-sponsored program, a consumer can receive instant credit toward the purchase of a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle upon trade-in of an old, gas-guzzling ride that has a combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles-per-gallon or less, is in drivable condition and has been insured and registered for the past year by the same owner.

“While the conditions of the new Cash for Clunkers program can be confusing, kbb.com provides a means of assisting consumers to determine eligibility and help get them into their next new car quickly and easily,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com.

Ford will be the official sponsor of the Cash for Clunkers program on Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com.

“Kelley Blue Book is pleased to have Ford as the official sponsor of the Cash for Clunkers Calculator on kbb.com,” said Justin Yaros, executive vice president of product design and development for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “Together, we have the ability to further educate the consumer on the new government program and assist in all stages of the shopping process.”

The CARS programs runs through November 1, 2009, or until government funds are exhausted. For more information about the Cash for Clunkers program, visit www.kbb.com/cashforclunkers to view program details, articles and a detailed video.

KBB.COM NAMES MOST-RESEARCHED NEW-VEHICLES FOR FIRST-HALF OF 2009

Redesigned Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Fusion, Volkswagen Jetta, Lexus RX350 Jump into Top 20 for 2009

IRVINE, Calif., June 25, 2009 – Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new car and used car information, today announces the results of the latest analysis by Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence of the top 20 most-researched new-vehicles for the first half of 2009. Because kbb.com is one of the most trafficked automotive research sites with more than 12 million visits per month, visitation to specific vehicles has become a leading indicator of sales patterns for manufacturers.

Kbb.com’s Most-Researched New Vehicles for First-Half of 2009

                                    1. Honda Accord            11. Honda Pilot

                                    2. Honda Civic               12. MAZDA3

                                    3. Toyota Camry           13. Honda Odyssey

                                    4. Honda CR-V              14. Ford Fusion

                                    5. Toyota Corolla           15. Ford Escape

                                    6. Toyota Highlander     16. Chevrolet Camaro

                                    7. Nissan Altima            17. Volkswagen Jetta

                                    8. Toyota RAV4             18. Toyota Sienna

                                    9. Toyota Prius              19. Chevrolet Malibu

                                    10. Ford Mustang           20. Lexus RX350

Import manufacturers Honda and Toyota frequently dominate the kbb.com most-researched lists, and while they still have a major turnout for the first-half of 2009 (securing 11 of the top 20 spots), this list demonstrates that a few newly redesigned models have captured the attention of consumers.

When compared year-over-year to the most-researched new-vehicles for the first half of 2008, four models are all-new to this year’s top 20 list: Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Fusion, Volkswagen Jetta and Lexus RX350.

Chevrolet’s buzzworthy Camaro made the most impressive jump onto this year’s list, from number 427 in June 2008 to number 16 in June 2009. Primary drivers of increased Camaro research include hefty movie promotions with the “Transformers” films and significant advertising executed in the past year.

The Ford Fusion jumped 43 positions from number 57 in June 2008 to number 14 in June 2009due to the introduction and heavy promotion of Ford’s 2010 Fusion and Fusion Hybrid models.

Volkswagen’s Jetta climbed from number 32 in June 2008 to number 17 in June 2009; increased interest arose from the introduction of the Jetta’s TDI diesel variation.

The Lexus RX350 jumped from number 29 in June 2008 to number 20 in June 2009, as Lexus introduced and promoted its redesigned 2010 model heavily in recent months.

The MINI Cooper saw the largest decline in new-vehicle research in the past year, falling 18 positions from number 19 in June 2008 to number 37 in June 2009. Interest in the MINI was uncommonly high in June 2008 due to extremely elevated gas prices at the time; now that fuel prices have returned to more ‘normal’ levels in June 2009, new-car shoppers are not researching compact and sub-compact models like the Cooper nearly as often.

“While mainstays Toyota and Honda continue to take the majority of the most-researched spots, the interesting newcomers to this year’s list demonstrate the vast power of marketing, advertising and product placement in generating interest among in-market new-car shoppers,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com. “Increased interest in sexy new vehicles like the Camaro, new fuel-efficient variations such as the Fusion Hybrid and Jetta TDI, and redesigned popular models like the RX350, indicates that consumers are paying attention to what’s new in the automotive marketplace and expanding their options as they research their next new car.”
