INDUSTRY INSIGHTS:

To the Battle-Stations!

-   James Bell, executive market analyst, Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com

The hot questions on the minds of those who pay close attention to the automotive industry has to be: “Will Toyota extend its recent round of incentives, now set to expire May 3?   And if so, will this lead to a new and high-impact incentive war?” While we cannot necessarily predict the future, we know that consumers respond to such offers in droves, and it could make for a very interesting sell-down period this summer in preparation for the 2011 model-year traditional kick-off in the fall.

Shopping behavior on kbb.com is a good indication of where the “heat” is. When a new vehicle is launched to great fanfare, we can see the ripples for weeks or even months as visitors use our site to ascertain if that vehicle is a good deal for them. But “heat” also can be fueled by discounts and incentives…especially when found on vehicles that traditionally are not purchased with deep discounts. Since we now see a slight thaw in the consumer credit market and stabilizing interest rate activity, strong lease deals also are on the rise. Leasing programs that are further subsidized by the manufacturer are especially seeing growth, such as Honda’s “Really BIG Thing” lease event that hits 10 vehicles with a $0 down payment, $0 security deposit, and $0 first-month payment offer. Many consumers may be thinking, “What? On a Honda!?” This demonstrates how crazy things have become in the U.S. market.

So, where does this leave the U.S. consumer as of spring 2010? They are in the driver’s seat, of course! Our expectation is that such programs will become even more prevalent as we move into the aforementioned 2010 model-year sell-down period. However, rather than appearing to respond to Toyota or Honda, the other manufacturers coming to this battle can claim that they are running nothing more than their “annual” sales events. We feel that this summer might very well be remembered along the same lines as the post 9/11 incentive war kicked off by GM and quickly followed in suit by Ford, Chrysler and others. The irony is that in this year’s version, if this forecast holds true, it will be kicked-off by Toyota and Honda, who were able to avoid much of the last war thanks to inherent consumer interest and keen production control. In 2010, it may be Ford and GM that can avoid such a full-scale war for those very same reasons.

NEW-VEHICLE REVIEWS ON KBB.COM - WRITTEN:

The following new-vehicle reviews written by kbb.com’s editorial staff went live on the site or were updated during April 2010.  To see any new-vehicle review from kbb.com’s editorial staff, please visit www.kbb.com and click on the News and Reviews tab, then select the make and model.

2011 Toyota Sienna

The new-for-2011 Sienna minivan offers an improved exterior design, better driving dynamics, a more accommodating interior and features that take it up several notches in the hotly competitive minivan category. With the redesign, it has certainly moved up on our list of desirable minivans. The 2011 Toyota Sienna folds together many passenger-friendly features including the reclining, leg-rest-equipped second row seats and an entertainment system that lets the kids watch two different programs. For those of you in inclement climes, the Sienna is the only minivan to offer the option of all-wheel drive…

2010 Mitsubishi Endeavor

The 2010 Mitsubishi Endeavor crossover is more highway cruiser than rugged off-road truck but, given how most SUV owners use their vehicles, it actually makes quite a sensible choice for families on the go. With room for five, a versatile and ample cargo hold and a powerful V6 engine, the Endeavor has all the attributes to compete in this class, and its stylish exterior may appeal to those unimpressed by more pedestrian offerings. Mitsubishi is also making some great deals to move the Endeavor, another favorable reason to test drive this often overlooked value…

2010 Mitsubishi Galant

Given a major refreshening both inside and out, the Galant's flashy styling and value-packed standard-equipment list should prove a tempting lure for buyers shopping the more mainstream Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. If you're looking for a family sedan with a plush interior, a racy exterior and a nice big back seat, the 2010 Mitsubishi Galant deserves a look…

2010 Nissan Frontier

The days of the compact pickup are fast closing. Witness the 2010 Nissan Frontier, a once-compact contender that has grown in size, power and weight. Along the way, it has also grown in capability and passenger comfort, placing it in the same general category as the mid-size Dodge Dakota and Toyota Tacoma. The Frontier has much in common with its larger sibling, the Titan, offering a fully-boxed frame, Nissan's adjustable Utili-track Bed Channel System and a spray-in bed liner. With one of the most powerful V6 engines in its class, the Frontier offers superior towing with almost sports car-like acceleration. If you need a truck that hauls, tows and loves to get dirty, but don't want to deal with the mass of a full-size pickup, the 2010 Nissan Frontier will impress you with its capability, utility and refined ride…

2010 Nissan Titan

The 2010 Nissan Titan full-size pickup is a worthy competitor to long-established rivals from Dodge, Chevrolet and Ford. Although the Titan is available only as a half-ton model, its powerful engine, numerous configurations and lengthy list of clever features should appeal to most light-duty pickup owners. Designed for the urban pickup owner, the Titan is as adept at carrying bikes, kayaks and ski gear as it is hauling plywood, concrete and dirt. The PRO-4X model suits the needs of serious off-road adventurers, while the long wheelbase model and E85 flex fuel capable V8 helps expand the Titan's appeal…

2010 Nissan Xterra

Many SUVs have grown into giant luxury barges incapable of tackling little more than snow-covered pavement, which is why off-road devotees and weekend warriors love the 2010 Nissan Xterra. Nissan's most affordable SUV is renowned for its rugged body-on-frame construction, powerful standard V6 engine and insatiable appetite for all things dirty and boulder-strewn. Although it faces tough competition from Jeep's Wrangler four-door, the Xterra remains an attractive prospect. Innovative features, such as a built-in first aid kit, adjustable cargo-hold track system and a roof-mounted drying rack, are geared toward those with active lifestyles, while the Xterra's civilized interior and comfortable ride make it perfectly suitable as a daily driver…

2010 Suzuki Equator

Considering Suzuki's long history of selling capable yet affordable off-road vehicles, its 2010 mid-size Equator pickup truck seems like a logical addition to the brand's lineup. Interestingly, the decision to sell the Equator was driven largely by the needs of Suzuki's motorcycle and ATV riders and not pent-up demand by automotive buyers. From Suzuki's perspective, fans of the company's dirt bikes and ATVs should get to haul their toys with a Suzuki-branded truck. Rather than building one from the ground up, Suzuki achieved its goal by partnering with experienced truck builder Nissan. The end result is the Suzuki Equator, a clone of the Nissan Frontier sporting a lightly revised exterior, expanded warranty, lower purchase price and those all-important Suzuki badges…

2010 Suzuki Grand Vitara

The junior member of Suzuki's appealing sport utility vehicle lineup, the compact 2010 Grand Vitara provides a comfortable, versatile and very livable alternative to a conventional station wagon or crossover utility vehicle – and has the power and mechanical capability to complete its mission on or off the road. Available in base, Premium, XSport and Luxury trim, this slick Suzuki offers room for five, a generous assortment of standard features plus the choice of rear- or full-time four-wheel drive, and wraps it in one of the longest and most owner-friendly warranties in the business…

2010 Suzuki SX4 Crossover

The 2010 Suzuki SX4 Crossover offers active-lifestylers a practical, comfortable and affordable front or all-wheel-drive utility vehicle with impressive looks and loads of features. Its unit-body design shares key engineering elements with the Swift – a popular Suzuki model currently sold only in Europe and Asia – and therefore endows this versatile five-door hatchback with some car-like characteristics. The well-appointed SX4 Crossover has a terrific warranty and merits serious consideration from anyone shopping for either a space-efficient front-drive hatchback, such as the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa or Scion xB, or a true all-wheel-drive crossover utility vehicle, such as the Jeep Compass or Nissan Rogue…

2010 Suzuki SX4 Sport

Best known in America for its small, rugged SUVs, Suzuki is steadily cultivating a new image, one that centers around small, fuel efficient cars. Leading the charge is the 2010 SX4 Sedan, which is available in both base guise and in a well-appointed Sport trim. Like the SX4 crossover, this four-door sedan shares basic chassis and mechanical bits with the Suzuki Swift, a well-respected player in European and Asian markets. Despite the SX4 nomenclature originated by its all-wheel-drive cousin, the Sedan is strictly front-drive – at least for now. It's also nearly 15 inches longer than the hatchback version, most of that stretch to accommodate its formal trunk. A step-up replacement for the old Aerio, the SX4 Sedan gives Suzuki an affordable compact entry that's far more youthful and fun-to-drive…

2010 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab X-Runner

The 2010 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab X-Runner features a full-length bed and a roomy cab, which gives a great combination for hauling sports gear and showing up at tailgate parties. The lowered sport suspension rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and performance tires. Reinforced frame bracing provides a stiffer chassis for better handling and, while the truck's lightweight rear end isn't exactly conducive to slalom course maneuvers, the X-Runner's handling is far better than the average Tacoma pickup…

2010 Toyota Avalon

The 2010 Avalon is Toyota's flagship sedan. One step above the popular Camry, the full-size Avalon offers a generous interior packed with so much luxury many owners consider the car to be almost Lexus-like. In what has long been the domain of the domestic automakers, the Avalon offers full-size car buyers a modern, front-wheel-drive sedan with an impeccable history of excellent service, outstanding quality and best-in-class resale. Beyond its solid engineering attributes, the Avalon also offers customers a powerful yet fuel-efficient V6 engine, a huge and easily accessible trunk and a sense of style not found in more traditional sedans…

2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser

The 2010 FJ Cruiser is Toyota's answer to the popular Nissan Xterra and the venerable Jeep Wrangler. The FJ Cruiser backs up its distinctive, retro-esque styling with serious off-road capability, thanks to features like body-on-frame construction, big tires, available four-wheel drive with two-speed transfer case and available locking rear differential. Whether you're drawn to it as a comfortable and versatile daily driver, a weekend off-roader or just an expressive way to get from Point A to Point B, you're sure to appreciate how well the 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser does it all…

2010 Toyota Land Cruiser

The 2010 Toyota Land Cruiser takes the best attributes from several different types of vehicles – luxury sedan, minivan, serious off-roader, full-sized pickup – and combines them to produce a comfortable, roomy and capable SUV. The flagship of Toyota's SUV fleet offers seating for eight, a 381-horsepower V8, full-time four-wheel drive, 8,500-pound towing capacity and technology that gives it an impressive ability off-road. Land Cruiser loyalists whose fortunes, desires and lifestyles have kept in step with the vehicle's increasing size, luxury and price will be attracted to this latest version. It will also appeal to those who demand opulent surroundings while carrying eight people, towing a heavy trailer or hauling a mound of gear…

2010 Toyota Tacoma

The 2010 Toyota Tacoma may be the Japanese automaker's smallest pickup, but it has long since left the realm of the compact courier. The Tacoma is the best selling pickup in its segment and dwarfs the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado in every area that counts. Its closest competitors are now the Dodge Dakota and Nissan Frontier and, while worthy opponents, neither can match the Tacoma's long history of reliability and high resale value. Wrapped in muscular, aggressive sheetmetal and touting the most powerful V6 engine ever to grace a small Toyota, the Tacoma has much to offer those who take their pickup trucks seriously…

WHAT’S NEW:

KBB.COM HIGHLIGHTS VARIETY OF FUEL-SIPPERS WITH TOP 10 GREEN CARS OF 2010

Editors Pick Useful Mix of New Green Cars; KBB Green® Offers Alternative-Fuel Car Guide, Tools, Forums, Blogs

IRVINE, Calif., April 20, 2010 – The Top 10 Green Cars for 2010 today were named by the expert editors from Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new car and used car information. In an all-new story posted to KBB® Green just in time for Earth Day 2010, the kbb.com editors list a variety of fuel-efficient vehicles worthy of buyers’ consideration. The coverage includes detailed EPA-estimated fuel economy numbers and editorial commentary on why each particular model made this Earth Day’s top Green Car List.

While it would have been simple for the kbb.com editors to rank the Top 10 vehicles in fuel efficiency, they instead sought out a variety of vehicle types for this list, since not everyone who wants to go greener will have their transportation needs met by a small sedan. To be considered for the Top 10 Green Cars of 2010 list, each vehicle was required to offer fuel economy and CO2 emissions superior to the bulk of vehicles in its class, and at the same time provide all the safety, creature comforts and driving enjoyment that would make it pleasant to own.

Buying a green, environmentally friendly vehicle is one way for car shoppers to deal with the ever-rising costs of fuel in the midst of a slowly recovering economy. Saving gasoline doesn’t just save the planet; it also saves money. Perhaps the biggest news this year is the fact that while hybrids still lead the pack in the fuel economy race and in overall ‘greenness,’ conventional vehicles are catching up on both fronts. At the same time, the diversity of hybrids continues to increase, so there are more choices and more competition for car shoppers’ precious dollars.

While this year’s Top 10 Green Cars list includes several from last year’s collection, it also includes promising newcomers like the Volkswagen Golf TDI, one of the newest ‘clean diesels’ offering hybrid-like fuel efficiency without the complication, weight and expense of a big battery pack; and the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid, which demonstrates that SUV-like features such as towing and cargo-carrying can co-exist with a hybrid powertrain.

“Whether car shoppers’ top motivations are to save the planet or just save some greenbacks, there are many enjoyable green vehicle options available in the marketplace now, with more exciting models coming down automakers’ product pipelines in the near future,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “From conventional gasoline-powered fuel sippers to hybrids to diesels, we think car shoppers will be impressed with the variety in vehicle types and sizes, as well as the vast array of various technologies, available on the market for the green-minded consumer today, as showcased in our Top 10 Green Cars of 2010 list.”

Select Choices from kbb.com’s Top 10 Green Cars for 2010 List

KELLEY BLUE BOOK’S KBB.COM AND FORD MOTOR COMPANY WIN INTERNET ADVERTISING COMPETITION AWARD FOR “CASH FOR CLUNKERS” ONLINE CAMPAIGN

Online Campaign Honored as ‘Best Automobile Online Campaign’

IRVINE, Calif., March 29, 2010 – Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new and used car information, today announces its win with Ford Motor Company in the 2010 Internet Advertising Competition (IAC) for ‘Best Automobile Online Campaign.’ The Internet Advertising Competition is produced by the Web Marketing Association to honor excellence in online advertising, recognize the individuals and organizations responsible, and showcase award-winning Internet advertising.

In Summer 2009, Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com created an online campaign geared toward raising awareness of the government-sponsored program Car Allowance Rebate System (“CARS,” or popularly known as ‘Cash for Clunkers’). Ford had been on the forefront of the 2009 federal program and was interested in further educating the car shopper, while also creating awareness of its fuel-efficient model lineup (e.g. Focus, Fusion, Escape Hybrid, etc.). Kelley Blue Book was able to provide its trusted vehicle values and information for both the consumers’ trade-in vehicle as well as the new vehicle they wished to buy under the ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program.

Consumers were provided a ‘Cash for Clunkers’ calculator to evaluate vehicles with model years between 1989 and 2009 based on make, model, condition and mileage. The age of the vehicle, its fuel economy and the fuel-efficiency rating of the new car chosen were key factors in determining whether the vehicle qualified for a ‘Cash for Clunkers’ credit toward the purchase of a new vehicle. The calculator also displayed Kelley Blue Book® Trade-In Values, to help consumers determine whether their vehicle was worth more or less than the possible credit they could receive from the CARS program.

“The Kelley Blue Book team works each day to provide visitors with the information they need to make a confident purchase decision. With the ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program, there was an added opportunity to educate the consumer on their qualification in the program and the types of new vehicles available to them,” said Tracy Stevens, director of product management for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “The award-winning campaign solidified Kelley Blue Book’s position as the leading provider of new- and used-car information and highlighted the company’s ‘sweet spot,’ vehicle values, while giving a manufacturer the opportunity to feature their qualifying lineup.”

Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com and its ‘Cash for Clunkers’ calculator exclusive sponsor, Ford Motor Company, promoted program participation in an integrated publisher and advertiser experience. Ultimately, car shoppers received a summary of their trade-in and new vehicle of choice to take to the dealership. In addition to receiving branding recognition with its logo on the ‘Cash-for-Clunkers’ calculator pages of kbb.com, Ford provided financing information for their models, and included special incentives in addition to the government subsidy.

“With last year’s CARS program, Ford strived to be top of mind for consumers looking for a new fuel-efficient and high-quality vehicle,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president of Marketing, Sales and Service. “The IAC Award win is a testament to the high level of success we can achieve when we work together with companies like kbb.com.”

Kelley Blue Book produced a video illustrating the tool and educating site visitors on the program. The online campaign was not only educational, but also provided consumers with support throughout the car-shopping process. In less than one month, Kelley Blue Book saw more than 800,000 visitors and 2.5 million page views.

“Kelley Blue Book continues to explore new, engaging ways for manufacturers to connect directly to consumers on kbb.com,” said Kim Notario, director of advertising and business development (East) for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “With collaborative ideas from both kbb.com and Ford, we were able to create new experiences for shoppers, which have resulted in an award-winning campaign.”

Kelley Blue Book also won the 2009 Internet Advertising Competition for Best of Show Rich Media Online Ad and Best Automobile Rich Media Online Ad for the Pontiac G8 – “Tommy Kendall Avatar” with Digitas.

The IAC judges evaluated each submission based on creativity, innovation, impact, design, copywriting and use of the medium. For more information about the award-winning campaign, please visit www.iacaward.org/iac/. For more information about advertising on Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com, please visit www.kbb.com/kbb/advertising/
