INDUSTRY INSIGHTS:

Is Bankruptcy an Option to Save GM, Chrysler?

-   Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director & executive market analyst, Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com

As the Obama administration considers what to do about the teetering finances of General Motors and Chrysler, many have suggested Chapter 11 bankruptcy, followed by restructuring and reconstitution of the companies. By entering Chapter 11, they argue, the ailing companies could get relief from their immediate cash-flow issues, tear up or substantially modify union contracts, dump unnecessary brands, close plants and “right-size” operations. Proponents of bankruptcy as a remedy in this unprecedented situation cite several air carriers as past examples in entering a Chapter 11 bankruptcy and emerging from it rejuvenated. But we have to ask, should bankruptcy for GM and Chrysler even be on the table? Is it an option that makes the most sense? In fact, is it an option that has any hope of success?

There are several reasons to answer no to all of these questions. First, there is the issue of the supplier base, which would be devastated, perhaps irreparably by a GM or Chrysler Chapter 11 filing. This alone makes the current situation different from the scenarios faced by the ailing airlines. Many GM and Chrysler vendors have operated for years on razor-thin margins and are heavily dependent on the business and cash-flow from automakers. If that cash-flow ceases for even a relatively short period of time, it could send many of those suppliers into bankruptcy and force others to simply close their doors. The rebound effect is that the already ailing carmakers would find it difficult and likely more costly to obtain the components, parts and services required to build vehicles. Further, the bankruptcies of supplier companies would have a ripple effect through the entire American vehicle manufacturing industry, causing hardships for the healthier companies as well.

If that were not reason enough to argue against bankruptcy, there is the issue of consumer confidence. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had decreased moderately in January, had a much more precipitous drop in February, reaching yet another all-time low. The Index dropped to 25.0 (1985=100), down from 37.4 in January.

“Looking ahead, increasing concerns about business conditions, employment and earnings have further sapped confidence and driven expectations to their lowest level ever,” said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center. “In addition, inflation expectations, which had been easing over the past several months, have moderately picked up. All in all, not only do consumers feel overall economic conditions have grown more dire, but just as disconcerting, they anticipate no improvement in conditions over the next six months.”

If consumers are so spooked by the dire economic picture that they even fear inflation, you can imagine the devastating effect on overall consumer confidence a bankruptcy of GM or Chrysler would have. Then, think of what this drop in confidence would do to the sales of General Motors and Chrysler vehicles. While not much has been made of it in the general press, we believe that the larger-than-industry sales drops that GM and Chrysler have experienced in the past few months are, at least in part, a result of the bankruptcy talk swirling around those two car companies. Should a bankruptcy be announced, we believe it would have much more injurious effects on sales – and threaten their future survival.

So while some casually toss out the idea of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy as being a magic elixir for these companies that are trapped in an unprecedented credit crunch and a sharp recession, we have to believe that bankruptcy is a bankrupt idea.

Not Business as Usual

Site publishers need to change the way they work with OEM partners in a challenging economy

-   Tim Hand, director of advertising and business development - West, Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com

There is an old saying about turning lemons into lemonade, and 2009 gives media publishers a great opportunity to put that saying into action. The economy is clearly impacting everyone - from OEMs to dealers to media publishers. I have been at Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com for more than seven years and while we have always been The Trusted Resource®, our OEM partners are coming to us for help now more than ever. They are looking to us to better understand how to reach the in-market car shopper, but more importantly, the vast majority of car shoppers that have delayed their upcoming purchases.

It is critical that all publishers have a thorough understanding of their own Web site and how their visitors behave on that site. OEM ad agencies are looking for publishers to help them become more efficient and to help with the optimization of their ad campaigns. ROI is imperative in the minds of OEM marketers and their agencies; if a site doesn’t perform then it can’t expect to grow, or even maintain, the advertising investment from the OEM. As SVP Media Director from Doner Advertising Mark Brown said at a recent ThinkLA breakfast, “Publishers have to move from becoming merely vendors to becoming partners. Also, in this economy, media properties are divided into two categories: 1) Nice to have on a media plan, and 2) Have to have on a media plan.”

Publishers must work with their OEM partners in terms of performance, business intelligence and innovation in order to either move to, or remain in, the “Have to have on the media plan” category. No media property can afford the luxury of resting on its laurels by failing to continually improve its offerings.

Performance – Both the publisher and the OEM/agency need to review current and future commitments to ensure that the performance evaluation structure makes sense for both parties. In many cases, the opportunity exists to optimize current advertising programs on the publisher’s Web site in order to improve and maximize advertising performance. Where current ad placements are not performing as well as other placements, both publisher and agency need to review ad creative, placement on the page and any other factors that could negatively impact the ad performance. After the review, make changes to see if performance can be improved. One of the many great things about online advertising is the ability to ‘tweak’ the campaign and test new creative or new placements. The publisher needs to be proactive in terms of monitoring the agency’s campaigns and come to the agency with ideas to enhance performance. The best approach is to come to the agency with a solution to a problem that the agency may not have even recognized yet.  For example, when there are questions about performance, smart publishers will conduct a creative audit. The OEM creative is compared to other creative from other OEMs appearing in similar placements to try and determine if the creative is a contributor to the performance questions.

Business Intelligence - Most publishers have some kind of marketing research available that can be of great help to both the OEM and the OEM agency. At Kelley Blue Book, we have a very comprehensive Market Research department that not only tracks shopper behavior on kbb.com via tools like Market Watch® (a leading indicator of sales, Market Watch tracks and trends national and local vehicle shopping behavior), but also has qualitative survey data in terms of car shoppers’ buying intentions. We actively bring research to both OEM and agency in order to help them get a better grasp of kbb.com visitors’ behavior on the site and also their general buying intentions. Publishers need to develop research tools to better understand how their own visitors navigate their site. Research can be a critical element in understanding ad performance on the publishers’ site, too. At kbb.com, we can provide cross-shopping data so the OEM can further understand who is in their competitive set, model by model. Publishers should work with their OEM partners to develop custom research studies to coincide with new model launches, too.

Innovation – OEMs and their ad agencies are very sophisticated marketers, obviously, but they are all running very lean marketing departments and budgets at this time. There have been layoffs at both the OEM and their respective agencies and, in most cases, they are barely keeping their heads above water just getting their basic ad programs developed and implemented. The smart publishers will proactively come to both OEM and agency with innovative solutions to better reach their target audiences on the publishers’ site. There is no excuse for a publisher not to come to their OEM partners with new ideas on a regular basis. This is probably the biggest change that publishers must come to grip with - that they, as much as an ad agency, are responsible to be creative partners in developing effective and efficient new advertising ideas to present to the OEM.  At Kelley Blue Book, we have had a great deal of success with ‘ideation sessions’ with both our client and agency partners.  In these meetings, we work to discover ideas to more effectively reach vehicle shoppers on kbb.com. These ideas could be forms of advertising or sponsorship opportunities, or could even be in the form of content sharing with our partners.

Media publishers have some choices in this challenging new economy. They could become more insular, more conservative, and cling to a mildly arrogant attitude of “the OEM needs us more than we need them.” The smart publishers, however, will not view things as ‘business as usual’ but will view this challenging economy as a unique opportunity to create and build a whole new kind of relationship with the OEM and agency. Smart publishers will see this time as an opportunity to become far more than a vendor, but rather a partner with an equal stake in the OEM’s success by working to provide better performance, proactive research and innovative ideas to improve the advertising programs on their site. By implementing this approach, the publisher will ALWAYS be in the sought-after category of “Have to have on the media plan.”

2009 BMW 1 Series

Unstable fuel prices and increasingly crowded roads have turned many car-buyers' eyes toward small cars. BMW would love to cash in on this growing interest, but can it do so without diluting or cheapening the brand's premium image? Last year's introduction of the 1 Series proves it can, and although only the 1 Series Coupe and Convertible are sold here, (there are three and five-door versions available in Europe), those who think the 3 Series has grown too big or expensive hail the 1 Series as the new heir to the iconic BMW 2002's compact performance crown…

2009 Buick LaCrosse

If you're looking for signs that Buick truly has turned over a new leaf look no further than the 2009 Buick LaCrosse. Roundly criticized as being too middle-of-the-road upon its introduction, the 2009 LaCrosse's metamorphosis displays a stylish new look and offers more standard and optional features. The new LaCrosse also boasts the option of a powerful V8 engine, an enticing feature not offered by the segment's leaders. And while it may not be ready to overtake the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry in sales, in the ever-competitive mid-size car game the LaCrosse is ready to move from benchwarmer to first-string. For Buick, it's exactly the direction its products need to be headed…

2009 Buick Lucerne

With its huge cabin, lavish appointments and potent Super model (that's Buicks name for its high-performance car, not some glamorous crime-fighting superhero), the 2009 Buick Lucerne increases its potential to lure back the coveted import buyer, and more importantly, to attract a younger following. Although not quite an image breaker like the legendary Grand National, the Lucerne is nevertheless changing people's mind about the Buick brand. Gone from the company flagship is the stereotypical cushy ride, soft seats and numb steering, replaced by a Cadillac-derived chassis outfitted with two potent engine options and a sophisticated sense of style. Although classified as a "near-luxury" car, the Lucerne's combination of affordable pricing and rich content offers those considering a Lincoln, Acura or Volvo a legitimate alternative with some serious cost savings…

2009 Cadillac CTS

When GM set out in the late 1990s to resurrect its once-proud Cadillac brand, the public process began with Evoq, the 1999 stealth-fighter concept sports car that eventually evolved into the production 2004 XLR. But the 2003 all-new "entry luxury" CTS sedan brought this new Cadillac look and personality to market first. Its "Art and Science" theme was a bold blend of space-age style and technology, and its edgy styling was polarizing – some liked it, some didn't. But it delivered the right stuff in performance, features and road dynamics, while only its austere interior caught critical flack. For 2009, Cadillac has perfected the formula, bringing a CTS to market that has won rave reviews from critics and customers alike…

2009 Cadillac Escalade

Fast-living rappers and bling-dazzled celebrities swooned over the original Escalade, but, in addition to more power and a greater length, the 2009 Cadillac Escalade stresses finesse over flashiness. Refinements are easily noticeable inside and out, and the newest Escalade behaves more admirably on the road than its predecessor. Marketers claim segment-leading horsepower and torque for the "Gen IV" 6.2-liter V8 and, at 60 mph, the engine cruises along at just 1500 rpm…

2009 Cadillac Escalade EXT

At the time the Escalade EXT was created, its purpose was to give Cadillac an entrant in the then-growing market for big sport utility vehicles and full-size pickups, and with features not available on the competition. While the Escalade ESV is derived from the long-wheelbase Chevrolet Suburban, the EXT is Cadillac's take on Chevy's innovative Avalanche truck, which quickly converts from a closed SUV to a surprisingly capable pickup via a removable Midgate Panel divider system that extends the usable bed into the rear-seat area. The 2009 Cadillac Escalade EXT boasts GM's latest chassis, body, interior and powertrain upgrades, as well as a generous allotment of new convenience and safety features…

2009 Cadillac Escalade ESV

Called the luxury king of SUVs, Cadillac's three-row Escalade ESV offers more horsepower and nine more cubic feet of cargo space than Lincoln's long-wheelbase Navigator L. Though the Navigator L offers a few competitive advantages, including its fold-flat third seat, more towing capacity and a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of nearly $9,000 less, the 2009 Cadillac Escalade ESV dominates the image arena. The full-size Escalade ESV has become the status symbol of choice for country clubbers and the urban cool affluent, and this 21-inch longer version offers even more than the previous generation…

2009 Cadillac DTS

The 2009 Cadillac DTS (formerly known as the DeVille) continues with relatively few changes. Designed to appease traditional Cadillac buyers who may be turned off by the company's newer products, the DTS maintains a firm foothold in the soft-riding, moderate-handling category. With its long hood, six-passenger seating and huge trunk, the DTS is equally as capable of accommodating a foursome's trip to the golf course as it is a family's weekend retreat. Although priced well into Lexus territory, Cadillac feels the long list of electronic goodies on the DTS, coupled with its famed Northstar V8 engine, should be sufficient to keep brand-loyal customers from jumping ship. Yet, as aging baby-boomers look for more comfortable means of transport, the DTS just may win over an entirely new generation…

2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

The midsize 2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer SUV may be one of the older designs on the market, but its combination of size, power, interior room and price make it a force with which to be reckoned. The five-passenger TrailBlazer comes with a potent yet fuel-friendly in-line six-cylinder engine that's perfectly suited for towing moderate loads. The TrailBlazer is also available as a high-performance version wearing the famous SS logo and packing a 390-horsepower, 6.0-liter V8 under its hood. Still, the TrailBlazer is beginning to show its age and faces tough competition from within its own family. For about the same price, the new eight-passenger Chevrolet Traverse offers more interior room, better handling and safety features and superior fuel economy…

2009 Dodge Caliber

As fuel costs continue to fluctuate, small cars are increasingly required to be more than just frugal commuters. Few vehicles better epitomize this trend than the 2009 Dodge Caliber, a combination hatchback, wagon and SUV. Dodge's most affordable offering, the Caliber is no bargain-basement car. Models range from a fuel-efficient economy car to a powerful all-wheel-drive variant and include such appealing options as a flip-down rear speaker bar, built-in iPod holder and a refrigerated beverage cooler, features you won't find on the Volkswagen Rabbit or MAZDA3. Then again, the plastics used to form the interior are not as sophisticated or handsome as those inside the VW and Mazda, an important issue for many savvy young buyers…

2009 Dodge Caliber SRT4

Chrysler's Street Racing and Technology (SRT) tuning division is charged with adding a performance edge to a variety of Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler products. Like Mercedes-Benz's AMG or BMW's M division, an SRT makeover touches on all aspects of the vehicle, including exterior styling, interior treatments, powertrain, brakes and suspension tuning. The 2009 Dodge Caliber SRT4 benefits from this all-inclusive approach with a top-to-bottom overhaul that turns the typically tame Caliber into a tire-spinning, apex-clipping performance machine. All the while, the SRT4 maintains enough comfort and usability to function as a reasonable daily driver…

2009 Dodge Dakota

Fresh from a complete remake last year, the mid-size Dodge Dakota can no longer be tagged as a "mini-Ram". Dakota buyers disdain today's bulked-up full-sized pickups and demand a leaner exterior. With little compromise in interior room or workhorse ability, the Dakota delivers a trimmer package that makes it easier to negotiate congested city traffic and crowded parking lots. Yet the Dakota remains roomier and more potent than its smaller competitors. The Dakota comes in four distinct trim levels. Each is available with either aft-hinged rear doors – called Extended Cab – or the four conventional doors of the Crew Cab. Most are available with rear-, conventional four-wheel drive or full-time four-wheel drive. Standard is a capable 210-horsepower V6, while an impressive 302-horsepower V8 is available…

2009 Dodge Grand Caravan

Although it's been overshadowed by the SUV as the symbol for family transport in third-millennium America, large numbers of families still opt for the arguably more functional minivan. Chrysler is widely credited with inventing the modern minivan and is now the only domestic manufacturer left in the game, as GM and Ford have effectively replaced their slow-selling minivans with three-row crossover SUVs. For the 2009 model year, the Dodge Grand Caravan and its slightly ritzier Chrysler Town & Country sibling, arrive with attractive seating and entertainment options to compete with the remaining minivans from Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Hyundai and Kia…

2009 Ford E-Series

Armed with a number of improvements aimed at improving passenger comfort, fuel economy and carrying capacity, Ford's 2009 E-Series full-size van continues to serve as the backbone of the service and passenger shuttle industry. Customers who purchase the E-350 receive AdvanceTrac traction control teamed with Roll Stability Control (RSC), and last year's improvements to the suspension increase the maximum gross vehicle weight rating to 14,500 pounds. The big E-Series offers a number of configurations, including passenger, cargo and cutaway, and is available in half, three-quarter and one-ton models…

2009 Ford Escape

Last year, Ford gave its popular Escape compact SUV a cosmetic makeover, with a new interior and exterior design, and improved sound insulation and seat comfort. For 2009, Ford completes the two-year renewal process with a major overhaul of the Escape's engine, transmission, suspension and brakes – changes that also apply to the Escape Hybrid (reviewed separately). With over a million units sold, the Escape has proven itself to be an appealing vehicle, yet with the current economic downturn and increasingly tough competition, maintaining its strong sales presence is now the new Escape's number one job…

2009 Ford Escape Hybrid

While the bigger, heavier Escape Hybrid doesn't deliver all the fuel economy of smaller hybrids like the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, it does offer greater utility and capability, especially when outfitted with four-wheel drive. Choosing the Escape Hybrid over a gas-only model will likely cost you more money up front than you'll end up saving at the pump, but you can still feel good about using less gas and spewing fewer pollutants than otherwise-efficient SUVs like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4…

2009 Ford Expedition

Although Ford's Expedition (and other large, truck-based SUVs) may be in market decline, there remains a need for vehicles with their capabilities. In the 2009 Expedition and extended length Expedition EL, Ford hopes to meet or exceed that need. Against rivals from Chevrolet, Nissan, Toyota and GMC, the Expedition stacks up well, offering innovative features like a power flush-folding third-row seat and an external keypad locking/unlocking feature. With gas prices in constant flux, those willing to take a risk may find now is the best time to make a great deal…

2009 Ford Fusion

To compete in today's midsize sedan arena a car needs to stand out, in both style and performance. The 2009 Ford Fusion is just such a car – a 180-degree turnabout from the lackluster midsize Ford products of the past and a major homerun for Ford. Although designed here in the U.S., the Fusion borrows much of its chassis and drivetrain from its Japanese cousin, the previous generation Mazda MAZDA6. The merging of American styling and Japanese hardware makes the Fusion a terrific value, offering superior handling, good fuel economy and low emissions (rated as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle, or PZEV, in California). Almost certainly due to an anticipated lack of much market demand, however, Ford didn't see fit to place a manual transmission in the V6-powered models, essentially cutting short the Fusion's potential as a bona fide driving enthusiast's car…

2009 Hyundai Accent

Introduced in 1994, the Hyundai Accent led U.S. entry-level car sales from 2000-2005, mostly due to its value for the money and an aggressive warranty. Now that fluctuating high fuel prices have this segment heating up, Hyundai's third-generation Accent will have tough new competition for 2009 – Korean partner Kia's Rio, Honda's Fit, Nissan's Versa, Toyota's Yaris and Chevrolet's upgraded Aveo – but it still should continue to be up to the task…

2009 Hyundai Elantra

A value-packed and inexpensive alternative to the segment-leading Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic, the 2009 Hyundai Elantra makes a great first (or even second) car. The spacious and fuel-efficient Elantra can comfortably and safely pack in a family of four (five in a pinch) and its cargo. From front to rear, the Elantra's sharp styling, roomy interior and quality-conscious engineering qualifies this fourth-generation version as a fully contemporary, yet affordable, sedan…

2009 Hyundai Sonata

If there's a single vehicle that distinguishes the new Hyundai from the old, it's the current-generation Sonata sedan. The redesigned Sonata debuted for the 2006 model year with relevant styling, class-competitive powertrains and a new feeling of refinement, along with every bit of the price-feature value that once was Hyundai's sole reason for being. Over the next couple years, though, the Sonata would begin losing ground in the segment as many of its best-selling competitors underwent complete redesigns. The sedan's passenger cabin became the greatest area of need, having been left far behind the competition in both styling and features. In updating its top-seller for the 2009 model year, Hyundai has certainly given the Sonata the attention it needed to be a true segment player…

2009 Lincoln MKX

Ford's luxury Lincoln brand has been on a recent roll with its MKX (X for crossover) and MKZ (formerly Zephyr) mid-size sedan. Derived from Ford's less-expensive Edge and Fusion, both have received positive reviews and have sold surprisingly well. Now comes this all-new flagship MKS (S for sedan). While it's loosely based on the excellent Volvo-derived architecture that underpins Ford's Taurus (formerly Five Hundred) and Taurus X (formerly Freestyle), it bears no resemblance to those distant relatives. We question Lincoln's move from names with heritage to MK-this and MK-that, but at least (unlike some) that key third letter helps identify the model…

2009 Lincoln Navigator

When Lincoln launched its original Navigator, it was America's first full-size luxury SUV. GM soon followed with the Chevy Tahoe-based Cadillac Escalade, and has followed with much-improved second- and third-generation versions. As expected, the battle was resumed a few years later with the launch of the significantly improved Navigator and long-bodied Navigator L in 2007, which still trail the Escalade in power but boast some advantages, namely the function and operation of their second- and third-row seats. Both rows fold flat into the floor, and the segment-exclusive PowerFold feature flattens the back row at the touch of a button…

2009 Infiniti G37 Coupe

The 2009 Infiniti G37 Coupe is the follow-up to the car that put Nissan's luxury brand on the map – in the division's 18th model year. Rival coupes from Mercedes-Benz and Lexus are reportedly on their way, but for now the G Coupe has staked out its territory in a three-car sub-category alongside the BMW 3 Series Coupe and Audi A5. While the faster, better-handling second-generation G Coupe doesn't deliver the famously nuanced driving dynamics of the 3 Series, it's fun, stylish and comfortable nonetheless, and enjoys a notable price advantage…

2009 Infiniti G37 Sedan

Intended to compete on a level playing field with German compact and mid-size sport sedans, as well as a variety of roughly comparable Japanese and American models, the Infiniti G37 Sedan matches smart appearance, bold performance and crisp responsive handling in four trim levels and offers both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. Now equipped with the same 3.7-liter V6 found in the coupe, the G37 (formerly the G35) enhances its credentials as a true enthusiast vehicle, inside and out. Although domestic models, including the Cadillac CTS and Lincoln MKZ, or Japanese counterparts, including the Acura TL and Lexus ES 350, are prime targets of opportunity, Infiniti is most intent on having the G37 sedan score biggest with folks who are also shopping the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class…

2009 Infiniti M

The 2009 Infiniti M distinctively blends sport, luxury and performance characteristics with V6 or V8 power. After a light freshening last year, the 2009 M35 and M45 continue to cruise through the crowded luxury field, bypassing more expensive sedans from Japan, Europe and America. The M series offers a choice of rear-drive or all-wheel-drive and a number of cutting-edge features such as a Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) system. Rated by the EPA as a full-size sedan, with interior space that nearly matches an Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class, the Infiniti M is priced closer to the smaller Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class counterparts – along with key Japanese mid-size rivals like the Acura RL and Lexus GS and the lone American entrant, the Cadillac STS. The Infiniti M's high-value and high-content formula is further reinforced by excellent reliability and strong customer satisfaction ratings…

2009 Infiniti QX56

Conceived in the bigger-is-better school of SUV design, the 2009 Infiniti QX56 takes its job as a full-size luxury hauler very seriously. Available in a single upline trim level, this body-on-frame design is based on Nissan's Titan pickup platform but shares styling and engineering basics with its cousin, the Nissan Armada. In addition to a powerful V8, rear- or four-wheel drive configurations and class-leading towing capacity, the 2009 QX56 features a plush cabin with standard seating for seven or eight. An abundance of luxury appointments makes this mammoth Infiniti the only import-badged luxury SUV with the scale, features and capabilities to compete directly with big domestic models like the Cadillac Escalade ESV, GMC Yukon XL and Lincoln Navigator L, while fending off other international nameplates, including the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GL 450 and the Lexus LX 570…

2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Grand Cherokee is legendary for its rugged off-road capability, sensible size and car-like ride and interior. While most SUVs have grown to near-gargantuan proportions, the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee remains true to the general size of the original 1992 model. Engine choices, however, have grown larger and include a fuel-efficient V6, a 4.7-liter V8, a powerful HEMI V8 and, for a limited time, a torque-happy turbodiesel. Jeep also offers a choice of three four-wheel-drive systems, which range from a basic shift-on-the-fly high/low transfer case to a permanently engaged system capable of sending power to whichever wheel has traction…

2009 Jeep Liberty

Die-hard Jeep fans may have worried that the redesigned Jeep Liberty would go soft in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience, but that didn't happen. Last year's complete makeover saw the Liberty become more civilized, thanks to a long list of features, improved ride and handling and better fuel economy. At the same time, a pair of very capable four-wheel drive systems, a highly functional interior and a more rugged styling theme allow the Liberty to retain its off-road roots. While it's difficult to meet the various needs of modern SUV buyers, Jeep fans can rest easy knowing the redesigned Liberty still embodies all that the Jeep brand has come to represent…

2009 Jeep Patriot

Based on the same platform, the 2009 Jeep Patriot and Compass have similar measurements, similar price ranges and offer almost identical sets of comfort and convenience features. So why would Jeep produce such similar vehicles? Well, the Compass is intended as an asphalt-tuned ride for city slickers, while the Patriot adheres more closely to traditional Jeep principles. Indeed, the Patriot's more rugged suspension and powertrain options deliver enough off-road performance for it to earn Jeep's "Trail Rated" badges…

2009 Kia Optima

The 2009 Kia Optima continues to offer buyers a well-built, well-equipped family sedan for less money than the competition. Based on the same platform as the Hyundai Sonata, the Optima distances itself with a new, sportier exterior and interior treatments, as well as a significantly lower base price. Over the last few years Kia has made impressive strides in both quality and content and, while not yet on par with such giants as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, the Optima comes very close. The Optima provides a roomy, comfortable interior, a large trunk and a choice between a fuel-efficient four-cylinder or a powerful V6 engine. Even the most basic models include such standard safety features as side-curtain airbags and front-seat active head restraints…

2009 Kia Rio

Consumers on budgets have learned that finding a new sedan for around $12,000 is not easy. And finding one with standard front and rear side-curtain airbags and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty leaves only one option: The 2009 Kia Rio. The Rio's bargain-basement price doesn't come at the expense of styling or fuel economy. The handsome little four-door is quite the looker, and those willing to spend a bit more cash can equip this little entry-level econobox with such upscale features as power windows, steering-wheel audio controls and heated outside mirrors. The Rio has also made great strides in refinement over previous models, with more precision in the gearshift, less vibration from under the hood and a higher quality feel both inside and out…

2009 Kia Rio5

Kia continues to take small cars seriously. When the South Korean automaker launched a wagon companion to its subcompact Rio sedan for 2001, that hatchback was called the Rio Cinco ("five" in Spanish), to denote the number of doors. The Cinco name may be gone, but the five-door hatchback remains with a simpler name: The 2009 Kia Rio5. Sharing much of its design with the Rio Sedan, the Rio5 has a sportier demeanor about it, not to mention a more versatile cargo hold. And, despite the Rio5's "entry-level" pricing, Kia installs six standard airbags in every vehicle. Kia claims to be the most improved brand in terms of initial quality over the past five years. A half decade ago it had serious room for improvement, but now it is certainly in the mainstream of vehicle quality…

2009 Kia Rondo

The 2009 Kia Rondo boldly strides into the burgeoning crossover segment with little concern for the fierce competition it faces. Affordable, flexible and offering both four- and six-cylinder power, plus room for five or seven passengers, this user-friendly front-wheel-drive hauler displays the kinds of features and options – including standard stability control, anti-lock brakes (ABS) and the industry's longest and most comprehensive warranty package – that have come to characterize most of Kia's current-generation products. While the Rondo's closest direct competitor would be the slightly smaller Mazda MAZDA5, its cross-shopping potential encompasses everything from a Chrysler PT Cruiser, Chevrolet HHR or Dodge Caliber to front-wheel-drive versions of smaller SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Saturn VUE and Toyota RAV4…

2009 Kia Spectra5

Whereas earlier hatchbacks, such as the Honda Civic and Volkswagen GTI, had only two doors, today's hot hatches have four (five if you count the hatch itself). The 2009 Kia Spectra5 follows this logic, providing the interior room and accessibility of the Spectra sedan in a sportier package that closely mimics the hottest of hot hatches, the Mazda MAZDA3s. While the Spectra5 can't yet match the Mazda in the areas of performance, features and resale, it does offer an inexpensive alternative with a lot of aftermarket potential. Don't forget that Kia's incredible 10-year/100,000 powertrain warranty comes standard, too…

2009 Kia Sportage

Those who remember the original Sportage SUV probably won't recognize the current model. Gone are the body-on-frame architecture, somewhat harsh ride and moderate engine power. The 2009 Kia Sportage derives its underpinnings from a car platform to give it a smooth ride, improved handling and better crash-test results. The trade-off is an inability to tackle the harshest sorts of off-road terrain (the Sportage lacks a high/low transfer case and locking differentials), but heavy snow and mud are still easily managed. And, while the humble Sportage must contend with perennial favorites such as the Honda CR-V and Jeep Liberty, many people will find its low price and long list of standard features quite tempting…

2009 Lexus ES 350

Where its competition caters to drivers preferring a more sporting driving experience, the Lexus ES 350 makes no apologies for its heavily weighted luxury trappings, cocoon-like cockpit and velvety smooth ride. Although this front-drive four-door still shares basic platform engineering with Toyota's best-selling Camry, the mid-size ES 350, on top of its premium Lexus pedigree, offers numerous additional refinements. While these comprehensive upgrades have helped maintain the ES 350's position as the volume leader of the Lexus sedans, the largely unchanged 2009 version continues to face tough challenges from a formidable field of international competitors, including the Acura TL, Audi A6, Cadillac CTS, Infiniti G37, Lincoln MKZ and Saab 9-5…

2009 Lexus IS

The current "entry level" model for the Lexus sedan line, the IS consists of the IS 250 in rear-drive or all-wheel-drive variations and the more potent rear-drive IS 350 – as well as the high-performance version, the IS-F (reviewed separately). Visually reminiscent of the larger GS, the IS melds sporty looks, enthusiast flair, a generous roster of standard equipment and legendary Lexus quality into a premium four-door sedan specifically intended to steal buyers away from the gold standard of this segment, the BMW 3 Series. Other competitors include Acura TSX and Audi A4, both of which are marginally more spacious inside…

2009 Lexus IS F

Recalibrate your image of Lexus. The 416-horsepower 2009 Lexus IS F, the fastest production Lexus ever, is the first Lexus to wear the brand's new F performance badge designed to compete with the BMW M series, Mercedes-AMG and various aftermarket tuners. Coupled to the Lexus IS F's 5.0-liter V8 is an automatic transmission that upshifts in a race-car-like 0.1 second. Lexus says that many IS F buyers will have owned Japanese performance cars such as the Mitsubishi Evo, Subaru WRX STi and Toyota Supra Turbo…

2009 Lexus GS

Slotting between the flagship LS 460 and the popular ES 350, the mid-size Lexus GS line occupies an admittedly modest but still notable niche in the sport sedan segment. Intertwining aggressive styling and formidable performance with typical Lexus luxury cues, it gives Toyota's premium division a very credible competitor in an arena most often associated with German offerings, including the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. In addition to offering the only hybrid in this segment, the GS 450h (reviewed separately), the GS lineup consists of three gasoline-powered variants. The rear-drive GS 350 and all-wheel-drive GS 350 AWD share a common 3.5-liter V6, while the rear-drive GS 460 is powered by a larger and more powerful V8 engine…

2009 Lexus GS 450h

Lexus established some decidedly lofty benchmarks when it set out to create the world's first hybrid luxury sport sedan. Beyond a suitably generous load of comfort and convenience features, this rear-drive mid-size four-door was charged with providing the performance of a vehicle with a 4.5-liter V8 engine while turning out 80 percent lower emissions, operating ultra-quietly in full-electric mode, delivering all the expected levels of luxury and still possessing the requisite amount of enthusiast-grade handling behavior. Launched as a 2007 model and given a slight freshening in 2008, the 2009 GS 450h does a first-class job of meeting all of those criteria with few compromises. While owning its specific sub-segment outright, the GS 450h also faces off against many of the same players as its GS 460 kin, namely up-line versions of the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Infiniti M and Mercedes-Benz E-Class…

2009 Lexus GX 470

Slotting neatly between the flagship Lexus LX 570 full-size SUV and the popular RX 350 and RX 400h crossover utility vehicles, the mid-size 2009 GX 470 represents a suitably Lexus-like upgrade of the rugged Toyota 4Runner platform, and it packs a full measure of techno wizardry and creature comforts along with standard V8 power and full-time four-wheel drive. Although it's now entered the graceful-aging stage of its generational lifecycle, the GX 470 remains extremely refined and lavishly equipped even in "base" form. With a solid blend of style, sophistication, all-weather and all-terrain capabilities and optional seating for up to eight, it continues to be a formidable competitor in a market segment that also includes the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Cadillac SRX, Land Rover LR3, Mercedes-Benz ML-Class and Volkswagen Touareg…

2009 Lexus LS 460

The 2009 Lexus LS 460 and its long-wheelbase LS 460 L variant represent new benchmarks in both technical sophistication and passenger pampering. The fourth generation of the flagship LS luxury sedan line embodies the kind of innovative features, impeccable build quality and attention to detail that have helped established Lexus as a preeminent power in the premium vehicle segment. In the case of the LS 460 L, additional rear-seat room and an even more compelling selection of standard and optional equipment put it squarely in contention with European prestige sedans, such as the Audi A8L, BMW 750 Li, Jaguar XJ8L and long-wheelbase-only Mercedes-Benz S550…

2009 Lexus LS 600h L

Toyota set the pace for hybrids, starting with the Prius. Lexus, its luxury division, has matched hybrid powertrains with bigger vehicles, delivering impressive performance along with reasonable economy. For 2009, Lexus again offers a hybrid version of its largest sedan. Similar to the extended-length version of the LS 460 sedan, the LS 600h L promises the performance of a luxury V12 model but with the economy of a "best-in-class" V8. Lexus calls it the world's first V8 all-wheel-drive hybrid, and a three-position switch allows selecting among "power," "hybrid" (normal) or "snow" modes for the powertrain. As no other manufacturer offers a hybrid this size – 202.8 inches long on a 121.7-inch wheelbase – the LS 600h L is in a class all by itself…

2009 Lexus LX 570

After a thorough revamping last year, Lexus' flagship SUV, the LX 570, rejoins the battle against industry giants such as the Land Rover Range Rover, Audi Q7 and Cadillac Escalade. A weak economy may hurt the entire segment this year, but with its powerful 5.7-liter engine mated to a six-speed transmission, an advanced suspension system and a sterling reputation for quality and reliability, the LX 570 stands ready to lure those few prospective buyers still shopping the full-size luxury SUV market. Those also looking for Lexus luxury with the option to traverse heavy terrain will find a solution in the LX 570…

2009 Lexus RX 350

One of the most successful crossover SUV offerings in the history of the genre, the mid-size RX series continues to attract buyers with its distinctive combination of style, luxury, comfort and safety. This line of car-based five-passenger family haulers includes both the volume-leader RX 350 and the RX 400h Hybrid (reviewed separately), and offers V6 power in both front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. Key RX 350 competitors in the prolific mid-size premium SUV/crossover segment include the Acura MDX, BMW X3 and X5, Cadillac SRX, Infiniti FX35 and FX50, Lincoln MKX and Mercedes-Benz ML350…

2009 Lexus SC 430

A pioneering entry in today's luxury retractable-hardtop segment, the SC 430 enters its eighth year of production by continuing to offer both a sporty character and a comprehensive array of features. Still one of the most evocatively styled vehicles in the entire Lexus portfolio, this V-8-powered, rear-wheel-drive 2+2 boasts the ability to transform itself from coupe to convertible at the push of a button. While the overall genre of high-end open cars has expanded in recent years, true upper-echelon competitors for this distinctive Lexus remain few. Heading the list are the two-seat Cadillac XLR and Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, with the BMW 335i Convertible and Infiniti G37 Convertible offering a more affordable alternative for those willing to accept a six-cylinder engine…

2009 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

For many, the Mercedes-Benz name represents the pinnacle of automotive design and good taste. While they may not have the means to climb into a new S-Class, the upwardly mobile still have a shot at joining the exclusive MB club without breaking the bank. Mercedes-Benz' most affordable offering, the 2009 C-Class, comes loaded with style and content. Starting in the mid-$30,000 range, the C-Class must contend with the likes of the Audi A4, Infiniti G37 and Cadillac CTS. And while some will note the C-Class lacks such technological gadgets as adaptive cruise control and adaptive headlights, it is still a lot of car for the money. More importantly, it is a lot of Mercedes-Benz for the money…

2009 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class

The CLK is Mercedes-Benz's mid-level premium coupe and convertible line. Although the 2009 Mercedes-Benz CLK costs significantly more than its competition, the company believes the brand's name and engineering excellence justify the higher price. Styling, performance and luxury hold strong sway with consumers in these market categories, and the CLK Coupe and Cabriolet are prime examples. The CLK Coupe stands out from the few others in this segment by touting a pillarless hardtop design and a stunning profile. As the CLK350 and CLK550 clearly place luxury above any really serious performance ambitions, true driving enthusiasts may find more to like in the Audi S5 or BMW 3 Series…

2009 Mercury Mariner

Compared to the somewhat rugged look of the Ford Escape, the Mercury Mariner, – redesigned for 2008 with new sheetmetal and a fresh interior – offers a more upscale, urban take on the small SUV. Although the two vehicles are mechanically identical, the 2009 Mariner's exterior clearly sets it apart from the Escape in both looks and image. Among its strong points is the powertrain line-up, with a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder, an optional V6 and an available hybrid version. The Mariner is a worthy alternative to the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Saturn VUE, and could be well worth the price for those looking for a compact SUV with unique styling and an available hybrid powertrain…

2009 Mercury Milan

As part of the brand's revival plan, Mercury has aimed the 2009 Milan squarely at customers who place a premium on upscale styling both inside and out. Sharing its engines and chassis with the Ford Fusion (and thus with the last generation Mazda MAZDA6), the Milan wades into the lucrative midsize family sedan market with a sense of individual style and available all-wheel-drive capabilities not offered on the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. Offered with a choice of a fuel-efficient four-cylinder or powerful V6 engine, the Milan features enough diversity to satisfy all but the most hardcore driving enthusiast. With prices starting around $21,000, the affordable Milan should appeal to fashion-conscious buyers who want to look good but don't want to spend a fortune doing so…

2009 Mercury Mountaineer

Although the 2009 Mercury Mountaineer may look like a high-end premium SUV, it's actually a stylish version of the rugged Ford Explorer. Mercury's twist, which includes a heavy dose of its trademark vertical-line styling and heavy chrome accents, dresses up the vehicle to near-Lincoln levels of luxury. Best of all, the Mountaineer retains all the beneficial features of the Explorer, including seven-passenger seating, a rugged body-on-frame architecture and all-wheel-drive capability. Toss in the standard Safety Canopy side-curtain airbags and a long list of luxury and entertainment features, and the Mountaineer looks to be quite a bargain…

2009 Mercury Sable

Sometimes, the past is worth repeating. Last year's revival of the Sable nameplate (formerly known as the Montego) has helped boost Mercury sales among long-time loyalists more familiar with the old name. As before, this latest iteration is essentially the mechanical twin of the Ford Taurus, sharing a platform and some styling cues while still remaining the up-market model of the two. A roomy and safe full-size sedan, the Sable competes in a class that includes the Buick LaCrosse, Toyota Avalon and Chrysler 300, and with its fresh look and low entry-level price tag, the Sable is better than it's been and worth a look for those seeking a sedan that can comfortably hold a family of five…

2009 Nissan GT-R

A performance legend in Japan – and perennial favorite of video racing gamers around the world – the all-new 2009 Nissan GT-R has finally arrived in the U.S. Priced near $80,000, the most expensive vehicle ever to wear a Nissan badge justifies its relatively lofty sticker with the appearance, attitude and, most of all, the ability to handily dispatch many costlier, more exotic foes, from the BMW M6 to the Porsche 911 Carrera Turbo. Only a Corvette ZO6 comes close to matching its price-to-performance index. Built on a unique variation of Nissan's FM (Front Mid-engine) platform architecture and fitted with a twin-turbocharged V6, dual-clutch rear-mounted transaxle and all-wheel drive, this 480-horsepower 2+2 super coupe also boasts a significant measure of exclusivity, as just 1,500 are planned to be heading to America for 2009…

2009 Saturn Vue

Launched in model year 1991, the Saturn brand was conceived by GM to lure away lucrative import shoppers. Nineteen years later, there finally is an entire lineup capable of doing just that. The 2009 Saturn Vue, and its high-mileage offspring the Vue Hybrid, is the fourth of five recently added vehicles that have totally reformed Saturn's showroom floor in a relatively short time span. The Vue's bold styling and rich interior might represent key victories in the battle for the hearts and minds of the buyers that have made the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 best sellers in one of the hottest segments in the market…

2009 Subaru Legacy

The 2009 Subaru Legacy offers buyers all the comforts of the finest sports sedan coupled with the sure-footedness afforded by Subaru's standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. No longer associated mainly with snowbound Vermont drivers and die-hard ski fans, the Legacy has blossomed into a handsome and sporty mainstream vehicle, offering top-notch ratings in the areas of safety, comfort and resale value. The Legacy's horizontally-opposed engines provide good power and decent fuel economy, and the GT features a turbocharged version that cranks out an impressive 243 horsepower. While not as smooth or refined as the engines offered by Honda and Toyota, the Legacy's drivetrain is every bit as reliable and its low-slung design helps reduce the height of the Legacy's center of gravity…

2009 Subaru Tribeca

There are a number of five and seven-passenger SUVs on the market, so what's so special about the 2009 Subaru Tribeca? For starters, every Tribeca is equipped with an advanced and capable all-wheel-drive system, a comforting thought for those whose daily commute sometimes includes deep snow and heavy rain. The Tribeca's unique boxer engine design lowers the vehicle's center of gravity and improves vehicle stability, and the Tribeca rates well in the government's front- and side-impact crash tests. Finally, the Tribeca's roomy interior coddles its passengers and stimulates its driver with loads of features, although the same enthusiasm is harder to generate when it comes to the Tribeca's exterior styling…

KELLEY BLUE BOOK REPORTS WHOLESALE MARKET UP, DOMESTICS START YEAR BETTER THAN IMPORTS

Company Launches Monthly ‘Blue Book Market Report’ Examining Weekly Value Trends, Site Traffic, Consumer Shopping

IRVINE, Calif., February 17, 2009 – Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new- and used-car information, today reports an overall increase in recent wholesale market values, as reported in the company’s new monthly Blue Book Market Report.

The all-new monthly Blue Book Market Report will examine new- and used-car data, residual values and consumer trending. In addition, Kelley Blue Book industry experts Eric Ibara, director of residual value consulting, and Juan Flores, director of vehicle valuation, will provide commentary in the publication. The first Blue Book Market Report will be distributed via email on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, and also will be posted each month to Kelley Blue Book’s Media Center at www.kbb.com/media.

Throughout January 2009, Kelley Blue Book’s vehicle valuation experts have witnessed climbing values in the truck and SUV segments.  Values typically strengthen within these segments during the beginning of the year; however, the recent increase was higher than expected. A portion of the boost can be attributed to significantly depressed values experienced through mid- to late-2008 and decreasing fuel prices, both of which helped stabilize these segments. Kelley Blue Book expects a return to standard seasonal valuation behavior during the first quarter of 2009, although continued fluctuations in key factors may prevent this return to normalcy.

Performance within each of the vehicle segments was mixed.  Domestic vehicles started the year with gains in the full-size and compact segments, and only a 1.4 percent decline in mid-size vehicles. This indicates returning demand for the domestic brands, which largely was absent leading up to the new year.  Contrary to historical trends, import car segments were some of the worst performers in January 2009, falling between 1.5 percent and 2.7 percent for mid-size and full-size vehicles, respectively.

The Blue Book Market Report will further explore the state of the automotive industry by analyzing Kelley Blue Book Wholesale Values, which are produced on a weekly basis from actual transaction data with economical and regional factors applied. The report also will discuss developments in residual values, and how the market influences these percentages in a variety of segments. Furthermore, the newsletter will include data from both Eco Watchand Market Watch® studies conducted by Kelley Blue Book Marketing Research. Eco Watch tracks in-market new-car shoppers’ opinions on fuel prices, alternative fuel-related technologies, environmental issues and vehicle consideration, while Market Watch measures new-car shopper behavior on kbb.com, capturing interest in specific vehicles.

“Our intent at Kelley Blue Book is to provide timely insight through our monthly Market Report into what our industry experts are seeing in the marketplace,” said Eric Ibara, director of residual value consulting for Kelley Blue Book. “We look forward to regularly sharing a snapshot of what is occurring with new, used and residual values. We will also examine consumer trends and provide projections for where the market is heading, based on Kelley Blue Book’s more than 80 years of valuation expertise.”

If you would like to subscribe to the monthly Blue Book Market Report, please email pr@kbb.com. For more information on Kelley Blue Book, please visit www.kbb.com/media

KBB.COM NAMES 2009 BEST NEW FAMILY CARS

Editors Focus on Top 10 Fuel-Friendly Family Haulers, Feature Wide Variety of Vehicle Segments

IRVINE, Calif., February 17, 2009 – Kelley Blue Book www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new- and used-car information, today announces its picks for the honor of being named one of 2009’s Best New Family Vehicles. The American family has never had so many choices when it comes to safe, roomy and affordable family cars. While a sea of vehicles is ultimately a good thing, it can also make it more difficult for families to pick a winner. To help consumers determine which new cars should be on their family’s consideration list, the editors of Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com compiled a list of the top 10 Best New Family Vehicles, evaluating an ever-lengthening list of eligible vehicles on such factors as resale value, fuel efficiency, capability and kid-friendliness.

This year, the kbb.com editors chose to put extra emphasis fuel economy when choosing their list of the top 10 best cars for families. Gas prices have dropped sharply from their record highs, but the sluggish economy is now dictating smart spending with a focus on overall value. Comprising a wide range of vehicles that includes a compact sedan, a full-size SUV, hybrids, non-hybrids and a clean diesel, kbb.com’s list of the 10 Best New Family Vehicles for 2009 features something for everyone.

Vehicles above listed in alphabetical order by brand

“Given the current state of the economy, parents want to get even greater value for their money while buying a new vehicle that will also accommodate their family’s lifestyle and needs,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com. “Fuel-friendly family cars come in so many shapes and forms these days that, no matter the segment or powertrain, there is an efficient – both economically and environmentally – choice out there to suit everyone’s needs.”

Kbb.com Editorial Comments on the 2009 Best New Family Vehicles

(Vehicles below listed in order of overall passenger/cargo roominess)

2009 Honda Civic

29 mpg (25 city, 36 highway)

For families that pride themselves on thinking small, the Honda Civic is a perennial all-star. Combining impressive fuel economy, unrivaled reliability and class-leading resale values, the winner of our 2009 Small Sedan Comparison is one of those special vehicles by which all its competitors are measured.

2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid

34 mpg (33 city, 34 highway)

The hybrid version of the best-selling car in the country delivers an average of 135 more miles from a 15-gallon fill-up than its gas-only counterpart. On long family road trips, you’ll have even less of a chance of making it through a full tank between restroom breaks.

2009 Chevy Malibu

26 mpg (22 city, 33 highway)

As a fuel-friendly family sedan, the newest Chevy Malibu has some seriously strong credentials. Not only does it offer class-leading fuel economy topping out at an impressive 33 highway miles per gallon, it also edged out the Honda Accord to win our 2008 Family Sedan Comparison Test.

2009 VW Jetta SportWagen TDI

34 mpg (30 city, 41 highway)

Thanks to the new technology and new clean diesel fuel that make it emissions-legal in all 50 states, the Jetta TDI’s cult-like following is at risk of being absorbed by the mainstream. For some, the Jetta SportWagen TDI is the gold standard of responsible family transportation.

2009 Ford Escape Hybrid

32 mpg (34 city, 31 highway)

After undergoing a major overhaul for the 2008 model year, the Ford Escape Hybrid is improved again for 2009 with a more powerful and more efficient gas-electric powertrain. Its city fuel-economy rating of 34 miles per gallon is one better, even, than that of the Toyota Camry Hybrid’s.

2009 Toyota RAV4

24 mpg (22 city, 28 highway)

In addition to class-leading fuel economy, the Toyota RAV4 offers one especially family-friendly feature uncommon in the category: a third row of seats. It’s a tight squeeze back there for some, but we ran into a family who shuttled seven people from Northern Utah to Southern California – and back – in a RAV4.

2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

26 mpg (27 city, 25 highway)

The three-row crossover continues to fortify its recently acquired status as the quintessential family car. This gas-electric version of Toyota’s Camry-based crossover has the distinct advantage of being the most fuel-efficient three-row vehicle on the road.

2009 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid

21 mpg (21 city, 22 highway)

Car-based crossovers continue to displace traditional SUVs in suburban driveways, but for big families with big passenger/cargo/towing needs, the full-size SUV remains indispensible. The Chevy Tahoe Hybrid is as green as it gets in this arena, and still offers towing capacity of up to 6,200 pounds.

2009 Chevy Traverse

19 mpg (17 city, 24 highway)

Boasting more cargo volume than even its Chevy Tahoe stablemate, the Traverse is the biggest crossover on the road -- yet it beats the fuel economy of many smaller three-row vehicles. We like all the Traverse’s siblings – Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook – but the Chevrolet has the lowest starting price, which makes it our family pick.

2009 Honda Odyssey

20 mpg (17 city, 25 highway)

We’ve always thought an Acura badge would look right at home on the sharply styled, thoroughly refined Honda Odyssey. The most premium-like minivan on the market is also the most fuel efficient, thanks in part to its (optional) ability to cruise on three of six cylinders.

IRVINE, Calif., February 11, 2009 – Kelley Blue Book www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new- and used-vehicle information, today announces 10 Romantic Rides for 2009. With cars and romance being a time-proven pairing, and the Valentine’s Day holiday weekend fast approaching, the kbb.com editors compiled a list of various new cars inspiring romance that are ripe to play prominently in the memories of tomorrow.

“So many people have romantic feelings tied to cars, whether it is the thought of what a car represents at a certain time in a person’s life, an activity they are passionate about, or perhaps the memory of a long drive with a special someone,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com. “When compiling the 10 Romantic Rides list, we shot our Cupid’s arrows in a variety of directions, targeting vehicles suitable for the romantic maneuvering of a wide cross-section of the populace. Some will seek romance in a small, fuel-efficient hybrid while others might have a similar experience in a high-performance sports car, but with Valentine’s Day upon us, love is in the air…and on the road.”
