**KBB Expert Analysis**

January Sales Expected to Increase 10 Percent Year-Over-Year to 900,000 units, 13.2 million SAAR

- Alec Gutierrez, senior market analyst of automotive insights for Kelley Blue Book

New-vehicle sales in January are projected to be 30 percent below their December high, coming in at approximately 900,000 units for the month, or 13.2 million SAAR. Since 2002, January sales have lagged the preceding December figures by at least 20 percent, so the monthly decline expected this year is beyond the average decline we have come to expect. A strong sales total in December that likely included sales from the first few days in January, as well as a drop in inventory levels, helps explain the sharp drop in January sales. At approximately 900,000 units overall, sales would be up nearly 10 percent year–over-year. This increase would line-up well with the average monthly year-over-year gain of 10.9 percent maintained through all of 2011. Through 2012, we are projecting new-vehicle sales to surpass 13.3 million units on expectations of a continued moderate U.S. economic recovery and high demand from the increasing vehicle age driving the need for replacement vehicles. Our analysts have produced a regression model that looks to unemployment, housing, consumer confidence and seasonal patterns to assist with our sales forecast for this year. Given current market conditions and our expectations for 2012, we believe sales will continue to improve at a conservative pace in 2012…
